Hello, wanted to check/adjust the valve clearances today so removed the rocker top and started turning the engine over via the alternator, could start to smell a faint smell of burning and very slight smoke which appeared to be from the alternator but then it stopped, it hadn't turned very far but after doing the valve clearances it wont charge, only get 12volts on the thick brown wire and the warning light is now on, I guess its knackered but could someone tell me the correct readings that i should have at the back of the alternator, in or out ?
Thanks in advance.

turning engine over by the alternator ,whats wrong with the crank pulley bolt ,are you sure you havent just shorted brown thick wire ,with ignition off thick wires on b+ terminal 12v ,little wire on d+ terminal 0 v

Double check that you have the 3 wires connected to the back of the alternator as the no charge wire is the brown/yellow wire and the exciter is the white wire :)

Thanks Daz, what do you mean by the exiter wire ?

Was easier to see what your doing via the alternator and only did it slowly and it was very easy to turn so not much resistance.

Yep i turn it over using the alternator bolt as it turns the crankshaft very slowly using the belt. My alternator has the thick brown wire feed from the alternator to the starter motor - thats how it charges the battery, the brown/yellow wire is the no charge indicator - if there is no 12v on that wire from the alternator its not charging (the warning light has 12v to it and the no charge wire when charging has 12v on it - so 12v either side of the light turns the light off ;) ) the white wire is a 12v feed to start the charge from the alternator - usually switched via the ignition :)

Yes the white wire should have 12v on it switched via the ignition as it feeds other thigs too like your fuel stop solenoid ;)
youve lost me ,there are 3 terminals on the alternator b+ battery feed wires (brown)usualy pick up from battery lead at starter ,d+ exciter ignition light wire, and w rev counter pulsed feed rev counter, all white wires with no tracer are ingnition live and arent in alt circuit

Thick brown wire = alternator charge to battery
Thin brown/yellow = no charge wire (12v feed from alternator to alternator light)
Thin white wire = power feed to warning lights

i think youd better check your wiring diagram ,a defender unless a rev counters fitted only has the b+ and d+ wires ,power for dash comes from ignition switch

Yes the power for the dash is via the thin white wire which is also connected to the back of the alternator with a female spade connector
The thin brown/yellow is on a post and the thick brown is on another post
