Hello, Yesterday after going into low range to go up hill in reverse, connecting a trailer and towing a small boat for 60 miles.

Then after disconnecting the trailer and going home, I noticed the rev counter increasing on depression of the clutch pedal.

The revs go up by 400-800 rpm, making gear change a pain. I thought may be it was there before but I would have noticed it.

I know you have to watch your gear change but I'm sure this is not normal is it? It's actually easier to change gear without the clutch.

I have read somewhere about a clutch rev monitoring sensor.

Does anyone else have this issue?

My defender is 1 year old 1st June 2007.

Thanks, James

Just had a good look round other web forums and it looks like ford suffers a lot from the over revving issue including the puma engine.

If I had paid for ours, instead of just being paid to drive them, I would have raised it with the dealer in the hopes of getting something done under warranty. I'm sure they're not meant to do it, but I wouldn't loose too much sleep over it

Going to take it to the dealer this morning and leave it there. I am going to ask for a test drive in there demonstrator to compare.

I will post the results for reference.

Other things that I've noticed on this defender compared to my old TD5 is:
Over rough ground (bumpy tarmac) the rear end rattles like I have a trailer attached.

Gears are a bit more clanky/back lash especially from 1 to 2.

Seems more sluggish before the turbo kicks in compared to the TD5. But midrange pulls like a train.

But I love it.

Update on the Clutch over rev problem:

My Landy has been at the Land Rover garage in Lewes today. I took the mechanic out for a drive to show him the problem, he agreed it was bad.

I just gave them a ring to see how thing were going and it turned out to be the brake light fuse. Thats all it was, must have happened whilst towing.

Amazing that a brake light fuse messed up the throttle control, sounds like a dodgy bit of EUC programming.

If any one ever has a over running throttle on depression of the clutch, you'll know what to check!

Damn, why do these new defenders have such teethy weethy problems you'd expect to see in 'ordinary' refined cars.

It needs to be mean, bold, tough and resilient. Not getting the grit in the eye so to speak that we hear about like this...

I always thought it was something to do with the electronic throttle? It feels like a smoothing feature. When changing the angle of the throttle there is a delay in response.
You can check to see if the engine is still making power by lifting off the throttle and a split second later depressing the clutch. The engine will flare.

Anyone else had this "flaring"?

fookin things are a pain in the arse off road siteing mobile homes.

very much reduced control.fookin muppets have killed the deepender innum.

I have the same problem with the over rev and brake light fuse issue.
It only happens when I tow the trailer. It has something to do with the extra load of the trailer lights. Its been back into the dealer 6 times in the last year with the same thing. At first they changed the fuse a couple of times, then they suggested I change the plug on the trailer, then they checked the wiring and found a "loose end", this time they have changed the tow electrics on the Defender.
Just picked it up this morning and about to take the trailer out. Sometimes it will take a couple of weeks to happen but I will let you know how I get on. Seems to me like its a built in problem.
