we have a defender 110 with Salisbury rear diff - 2000 TD5

Today big clunk as we drove up steepish hill

Front wheels truing to drive us forward and (at least one ) rear wheel trying to go backward

Friend says rear diff is broken but looks okay through inspection cover

Anyone know whats the problem and (roughly) how much to fix??

Thanks

that could only happen if rear prop/diff pinion were locked and couldnt turn and both rear wheels were been dragged

check to see if thats the case ,can prop be turned with rear wheel jacked up (hand brake off box in neutral

Before you go ripping stuff apart, pop the two rubber caps off in the center of the rear wheels, and check that the splines have not worn out. Quite common for the shafts to be turning in the center caps. Easy fix if so.:)
