Good afternoon! This is about my Defender 110 fitted with a GM Isuzu 2.8TD heavy futy engine (the version with cam gears, not cam belt), formerly a V8.

The vehicle in time has undergone many different installations of lights and other electrical devices, to the point that it does now require a bit of clean up of the system as there are many wires that do nothin else but bad earthing, and at times the alternator struggles - do you know of any great (yes, not good -> great, that is the ones that look at your car and diagnose it correctly, can work on it 3 hours and fix all the faults that have been a bug bear for the last 10 years) expert in older car electrics that is able to perform magic? Especially as there are a number of fixes that i want to see done live, e.g. repalce a number of cables with heavy duty amp ones, take dasboard off and place some sound deadening, etc?

Also, has any of you replaced the entire electrical system entirely by building a nnew custom one...what type of costs are we looking at?

Just buy new looms, can be bought. Auto electricians ain't cheap.

As long as you are methodical a rewire can be done by virtually anyone. remember the basic principles

• use correct grade of cable
• use fuses and of the correct size
• start from posotive and route through item to earth
• if cables and connectors look neat and tidy (most of the time) they will work with no drama
• DRAW AND PLAN 3 times before starting
• PLAN PLAN PLAN
• work on one circuit at a time at first

i did my series 2a full braid cable really neat job, with new fuse box and relays cost me approx 70 quid.

get a list of what you need, measure up and shop around


google has a great deal of help, but i would take all with a pinch of salt,

remember that if in doubt get bigger grade, but under fuse. this will ensure that your beloved will not go up in blue smoke.

but as long as you methodically route cables from the +, through a switch (or relay) via your accessory to - or chassis, you wont generaly go far wrong!

Keep all cables away from rubbing points and secure them well for the MOT.
so long as you plan out and use the old addage of measure twice cut once it will be fine.
