Last week my TD5 decided not to start, had full set of ignition lights, all normal, turn the key and nothing...... then after two or three attempts it started....

Same happend 1st thing this morning.... However when parked just at our local McDonalds same again.......... only this time it will not start at all....... all lights, good battery and good connections {checked those last week}.......... could it be the starter solinoid ? ?

Got the RAC coming out tome at 5pm but any heads up welcomed.....

HELP..........

if it just does nothing when turning key to start intermittenly , remove 3 x screw off solenoid under starter remove plunger and check contacts x 2 and plunger if poor clean plunger on wire wheel etc refit and order kit from ebay about £10,

I had exactly the same symptoms on my Defender TD5 about two weeks ago (I wrote about it on one of the other threads I think).

The RAC man knew what to check first: he reached into the depths of engine compartment, wriggled the exciter wire to the starter, and all has been well since. I was on my way in under 3 minutes!

He said that it might let me down again in, say, 6 months time and showed me what to do (i.e. where to wriggle the wire) if it did. Seems that these babies are susceptible to muck and grime down there - maybe I will strip and clean the connections one day soon and do what James suggests above.

I hope yours turns out to be as simple as mine was to fix.

:)

SORTED..... the solenoid has a small wire with a female connection on going onto a male spade connector connected to the starter / solenoid, this had worked its way loose and a "wiggle" sorted it............. got it home and have made the connection a better fit.... see what happens
