Hi All,
As the title says, the switch and dash illumination are off and fuse 3 under the steering wheel fuse box blows as soon as I replace it.

It is a 2003 Td5 facelift.

I have switched the wires from the heated windscreen and the air suspension last time I had the dash out and didn't come round to switch them back. Can this be the problem? The blown fuse occurred much later but I thought I would ask the knowledgeable people here!

If it isn't that, what would be the way to go find where the issue is? Can I disconnect certain clusters of lights to avoid having to go through all of them?

Hi,

What wires have you swapped for the heated windscreen and suspension? and why did you swap them?

Fuse 3 states it is for the LH headlamp main beam bulb.

Does the fuse blow even with the ignition off? or ignition on? if ignition on , is are the headlights switched on on ?

I accidentally swapped the connectors when I put them back in while I was doing adding a usb lead to my radio a while back (2 months ago), Need to swap them back again (air suspension is sadly removed by previous owner so has no function yet)
Will check if it blows without ignition.

In the handbook it says it is for the illumination and on Rave it says it is headlight?

Hi ,

Yeah you are right, It may be because the rave is for the prefacelift model. ( as a guess)

as the owners manual for the facelift does say it is switch illumination. ( good catch on that..

)

On late facelifts F3 is what's F33 on others and it's for interior illumination and RH head/side/tail lamps so first to check would be the RH light clusters and the towing socket to not be a short there so start unplugging these one by one

Owners handbook states F33 is for the RH rear /tail / sidelights.............

LOL, these books drive me mad!!! is there any that are clear and right?

In the hand book that came with the car it tells me fuse 3 is for instrument pack and switch illumination.

Fuse 33 is side + tail lights RH
Headlight leveling switch
Radio
Trailer socket
Switch illumination

Mine is the same 03 TD5 , In the fuse panel sticker.

F3 shows a handbook piccie.
F33 hows RH sidelight .

Manual states

F3 instrument panel and switch illumination
F33 RH side light et al, as you have written above,

So just confirm, F3 blows instantly as you put it in or only when you switch on the lights?

Unfortunately i couldn't find any diagram where F3 is linked to the switch illumination even though in reality it happens... are your RH exterior lamps working with F3 blown/removed?

Just been and checked mine.

F3 OK, switch illumination OK and RH side lights OK
F3 Pulled, Switch illumination NOK RH side lights OK.
F33 OK, Switch illumination OK RH side lights OK
F33 Pulled Switch illumination OK RH side lights NOK.

Then it's a real mess and as i can't find any diagram with this configuration i can't help...in all the diagrams(including those for '03) F33 is for switch illumination and RH lamps both and F3 for LH main beam even though the fusebox layout is different

Cheers for that, lights seem to be ok in mine and fuse 33 and fuse 33 is fine

It is a mess hence hard to know where to start!

I need to check how the fuse blows as I ran out of fuses. Will be back when I know!!!!!!

Just a thought, if the switches have been reversed (wrong plug in switch) who's to say the wiring is correct?

That is to say, each switch has a different function so one could be + at a certain pin and the other - which would account for the fuse blowing immediately.

I would disconnect the switches and see what happens before trying everything else....

good point, I will try swapping the connectors when I bought fuses.
