When I first landed Pumkin, everytime she was serviced I would go and watch the mechanic, I would bring the oil, and filters and just watch.
The last 3 times I did not, I dropped her off and gave him the parts.

Last couple days she started to sound a little loud and rattly so I decided to change the oil myself.
So last night underneath I went.
When I turned the oil plug loose I could not believe what came out.
It looked and felt like black water!!

I have a feeling that the last 3 times the oil was not changed.:mad2:
AND a few weeks ago I had him change the diff,gear and transfer case oils.
I bet they were not done.??

I have now found out that other people have had issues with this guy.

I am now looking for a new mechanic.

BTW when I change the oil last nigh, even my wife noticed how much quieter Pumkin sounded.

Just saying.

The guy is in the Caribbean, what you expect him to name it? British cabbage?

Natas this is bad news,marry to hear that.
Happy you found out and maybe if you can, try changing the oil yourself.

Will be doing PUMKIN myself from now on.

Unfortunately he has also serviced my Cooper S and the wife's Honda.
Gonna get them done ASAP.

Black and thin is not the end of the world, what spec oil did you use?

If you were running synthetic it won't be that bad either, but from what you wrote and the frequency of oil change it's seems like mineral.

If I put fresh golden oil in my fender and drained it immediately it would be black. Diesels are dirty engines.

When I go to a mechanic to get work done I use small 'telltales' on bolts etc to make sure that what was said done was actually done.

I also ask for any bits taken off to be kept so I can inspect them.

Yep granted. I wasn't sticking up for the mechanic just saying black oil is not necessarily bad from the sump.

Yep change regularly. It's a 10min job to do engine oil.

The oil is always black on the way out but not the consistancy of water.

I change my oil every 2500-3000 miles and use Castrol 15w-40.

The noise stopped as soon as the oil was changed.

I am not on a witch hunt with this mechanic, I consider him a good friend. But, other people have told me the same story. Some stories worse than mine.
