Crank bolt has been loose. Quite often the result of some dickhead loctiting bolt but not torquing it properly. 80nm then one and a half flats or 90 degrees.

The bolt was a lot looser than I expected, especially as the rest of the engine and vehicle have been looked after by the PO.
All the bolts and nuts I removed were copper-slipped, not a round head anywhere (aside from the one on the pump adjuster!), the rocker space is spotless and when I rebuilt the head over the weekend, the head has come up like new in the spirit washer!! (photo attached)
So a loose-ish crank bolt that has signs of Loctite on did surprise me!
EDIT: 80Nm then further 90deg is for the 300TDi I believe....according to the Defender 200TDi supplement manual it is between 333Nm and 350Nm (which is a fecking lot) extract attached.

hells bells at that figure i would be concerned with something going pop on the torque up.. mind you i dont have a torque wrench that would go that high !
Yes i know what the torque setting is for the 200TDI. But how many of Joe public have a torque wrench that will touch that. The 300TDI method maybe a easier way of achieving the same result. 80nm and then a further 90 degrees is also a fecking lot. The two engines have basically the same setup in that area can't see a problem.

Don't know about torque wrenches. I reckon even my 1/2" breaker bar would be bending like a banana at that.
Still, you're in Defender territory, where aftershave is actually insteadofshave and comes from a 5 gallon can, comfort is for men unsure of their sexuality and sophistication is a woman who owns knickers.
If it had been a Gaylander you could have done it up by hand ... with a broken wrist.
Get yourself a decent bar and it won't. Some of the breaker bars around these days are ****e. Shiny cheap and crap. If you want a good one you have to pay. Sealey are about the best of the cheaper ones.

I think it is fairly obvious that it wasn't. Some think loctite and a nip is good enough, it isn't.

Leaned on the passenger wing, two hands on the 2ft breaker bar (decent one!) and pull like fecking mad....made 90deg with the bar looking like a banana (did go back straight!), but even for me there was a bit of a puff and pant!

That's why you don't drive a Defender.
Good job he only has a 2.5 DSE then, on that the crank bolt is 100Nm plus 60 degrees, then another 60 degrees, then another 30 degrees. So the Defender one is quite slack by comparison.

But 100Nm then 60,60,30 would be a killer!

Has to be done properly on the M51 Ant or there is a chance of losing the oil pump drive as some have found out.
