next big problem,

occurred late january this year to the series 3 '72 petrol, the back diff box started leaking, we tried to patch it up and failed, on inspection it had a crack that had been dodgily repaired by welding etc then mastic type years ago. took it to a near by lr specialist where we had to wait 3 weeks to get it in and a month to get it done (had two other less unecessary jobs but requested) any how it is still leaking. what course of action should we take i am loathed to pay £45 a hour again and wait a lifetime for it not to work, can anyone recommend a non welding product that will bodge it up. in reality the thing should probabily be taken of, with the old crap ground off and new weld put on and ground to a finished, but i cannot do that.

A few years ago my sister in law took her car to a garage to be serviced, they overtightened the sump plug and cracked the sump by the thread (numpties) so it was weeping oil through the crack. She was skint at the time and couldn't afford to buy a new sump so I patched it up with some chemical metal and told her it was a temporary repair, 3 years later it's still there.

I agree with both the the above
if chem metal doesnt work then replace it with a second hand one

thanks for the advice folks, replacing the axle seems a tad drastic, but at that price a possibility, shame about the distance. Can series diff housing'd be picked up? or can defenders be fitted?

Is it just the diff pan leaking? You can buy replacements to weld on.

Common problem, dose of the tinworm, they get pinholes of rust ...

...

There has been several threads on here, about changing diff cases and welding both repair patches or pre-fabed repair cases...

Here's an example - just needs someone handy with the 'hot spanner' to fix it on.

Thanks for that, definitely best course of action as i am sure welding on a weld that welded a weld would not be successful, no telling what the original weld patched up but it was more than a pin-hole
