I know there's plenty on here about fitting electric fans in general, but I was wondering what thermostat temperature range I should be looking for, or if someone could recommend a variable one?
Search KENLOWE. Mine is fitted with an adjustable REVOTEC in the top hose. Pretty expensive at between £46 and £55 + vat depending on diameter.
Demon Tweeks have them. They also have a Kenlowe one for around £33.00 + vat. Don't think the Kenlowe is adjustable though.

A good variable switch is quite expensive but well worth it.

Or you could get a variable stat from CPC | CPC - Over 100, 000 products from one of the worlds leading distributors of electronic and related products., needs a bit of DIY, a box to mount it in and a relay to drive the fan, but not expensive at about £12. I can look up the part number if you are interested.

Cheers for those ideas chaps! Anyone got any idea what is considered 'normal' temperature range and at what point the fan should ideally kick in? I know it's going to vary a little between engines and condition of the rest of the cooling system but I'm looking for a general guide for setting up, or is it more of a touchy feelly thing, and just run it and see?

Get the engine up to running temperature as per the guage and turn the stat so that the fan comes on, then just back it off so the fan stops. The actual temperature for the fan to cut in will I expect be around 95 to 100C, but remember the adjustable guages do not have a very accurate scale for setting, it has to be a bit of trial and error.
Well MY Kenlow came with an ajustable thermostat, & it works just fine, only cuts-in when I tow my large, loaded trailer up & over the moors, but I can easily raise or lower the on/off range to suit!!
AND, I also fitted a pair of 2-stage over-ride switches so I can control further from the cabin.

Kenlowe is THE BEST way to go ..However, the 'Stat from a Central heating boiler will do the same ( I'm a heating Eng!!) ...The good thing about using one is they are Rated to pull a higher current .. i.e. you wouldn't need a relay to kick in the fans...
Mount on the front offside wing (just behind the battery,) run the Sensor "Bulb" into the top rad hose.. take a live feed from ignition side of the fuse box & ground wire to chassis
Should take about 10 mins MAX set the dial to about 90/95ish ( the Average running "Normal" temp of the V8 is around 80/85 ish)
***NOTE***
If in "Standing" traffic the fans WILL KICK IN & they pull a hell of alot of current.... I had one in my 1972 MGB Roadster Went thru Blackpool Illuminations by the time I'd reach the other end & parked up my battery was FLAT AS A FART!!!!!

Wammers,.............. I ive in Fleetwood I was going thru on me way home from work 1 nite ............ Bleedin GROKLES!!! Stoppin & pointin at coloured bulbs hangin from Lamposts!!!!!!
I mean who in their right mind would come from BIRMINGHAM on a coach to see a load of coloured bulbs!!! ..... AND PAY TO COME AS WELL!!!!!

AGREED. Blackpool is the only place on earth i know of that if you walk around with £100.00 in your pocket everyone smiles at you. Walk around with empty pockets and they never look your way. They know, how i don't know, but they do. The only good thing in Blackpool is the road to Preston or in your case Fleetwood. Used to do a lot of work at docks when i was a diver. Spent many a happy and sometimes (in winter) cold and miserable time at the bottom of the docks taking ropes off props, doing inspections and such like. Good memories, we used to go to a little greasy cafe just up from dock entrance, dirty filthy hole on the face of it, but best bacon butties and mugs of tea on earth.

Sorry to pop yer baloon ..... but that cafe is now ........................................................ASDA!!!! .. Tis all gone my friend!!! The turn that USED TO get into the dock gates now puts you into the Fish Retailers car park!!!!! ..... & the road that took you up to the Wyre Lock keeper cottage & access to the No1 Fish dock now goes to ...MAC-DONALDS!!!

The stat from a central heating boiler?
they are generally designed for about 5 amps AC. Some of these electric fans pull 30 amps DC, more on start up. AC switches have to subsantially de-rated when used on DC due to the potential to arc over being greater on DC than ACWhatever stat is used, unless it's very industrial and rated 30 amps DC, you will need a relay.

It really depends on which 'Stat you get ...these days ... MOST are AC as you quite rightly say ..however,if you get one for an "Industrial" type boiler (Ideal or BROAG) ... all of these are high rated 30Amp stats (Needed to run/switch the Power Gas burner, Reillo or Nu-Way burners, ect.......)
I would WHOLLY concur with you that a "Domestic" type Stat will NOT Cut the Mustard
(Sorry I should have made myself clearer, being a Commercial Gas Eng the "30 Amp" ones are the only ones I work with !!!)
