Hi guys I have a coolant problem my 300 tdi shows some leaking from the P gasket but I lost about 1/4 pint of coolant when I stopped out side home. it took a kettle of water about 1.7 Ltr butt decided to look further took of big brass nut from thermostat housing not very much coolant that side topped it up see how it goes looked on RAVE coudnt find any mention of P gasket in cooling section and why are there two electric senders under the thermostat housing.
I found out what the leak was its that little core plug at the back of the head,I mixed some special 2 part liquid metal and splodged it in with a a metal disc and its been left to set, I'll see what its like in the morning. Does any one know an easy more permanent repair.
Looks like the head will have to come off, might as well do the timing belt and P gasket as well, So I've got a big shopping list, head set belt kit P gasket core plug ect, in your opinion who are the best suppliers on the net Craddocks, Paddocks or is there any other suppliers that do decent quality spares, any help will be appreciated, thanks

I've used Paddocks before and they were excellent. There are also a lot of very good sellers on eBay if you're open to looking/buying there.

In my experience Paddock's provide good service and if they have anything out of stock they tend to call you back quickly, BUT if they call and say what you ordered is out of stock INSIST on getting what you ordered if it was genuine/respectable manufacturer or they'll fob you off with BritPart cr@p.

Are you asking how easy if is to change a core plug,in essence ?
If so,very easy.With the head on,fiddly.you mention taking the head off....in which case,it couldnt be easier.Either drive a self tapper into the core plug and use a claw hammer or pry bar to pull it out like a cork from a bottle or tap a screwdriver through the hole thats already there and lever out with a woodblock fulcrum if needed.That or a small punch/drift/chisel to the rim of plug on one side,knock in so the plug pivots.Any or all the above can result in the plug collapsing so you use plier or grips to pull the remainder out.
All that sounds LOADS harder than it really is....I was trying to cover all eventualities !
To fit a new one,make sure opening is clean but dont abradeit in such a way as to enlarge , place suitable size socket inside dish of plug , gently tap in so it goes in evenly to the same depth as before.
