The fan control unit is looking for signals in a specific range. If the signals are out of that range its designed to protect the engine ie turn the fans on cos it thinks there is a failure! If the sensors appear to be ok and the engine ECU isn't faulting anything, my suspicion would be the fan control module being faulty, but obviously its a guess!

well still doing it rang landrover and the module is 216 pounds but they dont stock it anymore its been superseeded and u have to buy whole new fans and wiring loom at a cost of 700 pounds
 
If its not really that much of a problem I'd live with it! Plus that's why borrowing one for substitution is a must to be 100 % confident as the signals are pretty hard to measure and make sense of,

Isnt there one temp sensor for the guage and one for the ECU? Have the same problem on our Open air 1,8 2000, have been driving all winter here in Norway with both fans electrically disconnected, but have ordered the ECU temp sensor, so hope this is the solution
 
the 1.8i has one for the temp gauge and one for the ecu dont know if the diesel engine is the same

You're not the only one having cooling fan/system problems Cremater, I had my 53 plate TD4 plugged in to the computer 2weeks back to try and find out if there was a fault code showing. The old girl was chuffing out quite a bit of blue ish smoke on start up anyway, long story short, it showed up as coolant/engine temp sensor fault, so changed it and now when I sart the car from cold, the one cooling fan kicks in at full tilt for about two minutes, the temp gauge shoots right up to the red light and the engine management light is constantly on. I am going to have to bite the bullet and take it to a Landrover professional I think.

Sounds like the temp sensor is open circuit or out of spec when cold.
