I think I get the general idea of what your saying. Keeping focused on the loss of coolant. If you're saying that when you put the heater on in the car your eyes sting (also sickly sweet smell??) then I would say your heater matrix is leaking coolant into the cabin space. This is a known Landrover problem, not just the Freelander. To check, get down under the dash, behind the central console. Push a clean tissue into the gap between the air handler and the carpet. Does it come out wet and possibly green? If so then its the matrix. Bad news is its not easy to change.

As for your glowing manifold, :wtf: comes to mind.... I'd seriously get that looked at.

I too was loosing coolant - but only occasionally - and it took ages to locate. The coolant was spotted dripping from the bottom of the chassis but was identified as leaking from the water pump which is well hidden. Pump replaced - problem solved. Worth a look. Good luck!

Had the same problem and smell... turned out to be the heater matrix. Do as Darmain suggested.
