I didn't do a search on this as surely no-one could have asked such a daft question but i'm having a bad day and feeling very divvy, i couldn't see any max fill mark on my Disco's expansion tank and the level looked a bit low to me so i've put in about 3 pints of coolant now the level is much nearer the top-my concern though is this...when the water gets up to temp and pressurises if i've overfilled will this endanger the head gasket on a high mileage engine which i have no idea how old the head gasket is?, sorry to ask what on face value appears to be a stupid question but i'm going on a fairly long drive on Saturday and don't want to end up in the **** if i can prevent a disaster before i go....thanks in anticipation of replies.

you cant over fill and hurt it .it will let any excess out of cap cap has pressure valve

take a look inside tank, should be a upright post in there, fill to top of that when coolant is cold. Sounds like you have put heaps more than needed, could do damage.

Hmmm, thanks for replies but to be honest i didn't see any level post in the tank but to be fair i wasn't looking for one inside (and in hind sight of course a level mark on the side would be pretty useless on a black plastic tank which you can't see through lol)

After poking around in the tank I've found what I assume to be the level thing (back end of tank), several squeezes of top hose later it's about right level now, what a dumb idea to have a level marker that's impossible to see, water now about 40mm from underside of top of tank but feeling with a screwdriver it's about right on the level

The level on the inside should at the level of the seam on the outside of the header tank. I assume this is a TDi 300?

As thebiglad said, personally I find shining a torch inside the expansion tank and a slight nudge to the Disco soon show's the coolant's level against the X marker.
