Hi My Freelander 1 1.8 litre petrol has started to leak coolant water the problem is i cannot see where it is coming from only there is water directly below the timing belt could it be the inlet manifold gasket or the water pump not being mechanically minded i havent a clue.Regards Martin.:confused:
 
directly beneath the timing belt , it could be from the water pump, it could be from the o ring that forms the thermostat seal, it could be from the pipe that crosses the back of the engine, time to remove the undertray and investigate, it could be from the outlet from the head up to the coolant bottle.
 
Very easy to check if it's the inlet gasket, just run your finger under the square lip of the inlet manifold and if it's wet, thats where it is. However this leak is more likely to run down the back of the engine rather than the side where the timing belt is, so once you rule out inlet manifold i'd put my money on it being the water pump.

Do you notice anything being a bit noiser lately? The pump can start to make a bit of noise when it gets bad.

No, he's definitely got the K series in mind.

The outlet from the coolent bottle he's talking about goes through the inlet manifold and directly into the head. This is where the inlet manifold usually leaks, however it could be something as simple as a split in the pipe or the pipe clamp not on correctly. Though this would likely make a leak down the back of the engine rather than the side under the belt.

Thermostat is also under the inlet manifold, but again leak would be on back of engine.

Depends where OP has actually seen the leak. Does he mean under the timing belt... (but on the undertray) in which case it could have ran and the origin might not even be near the timing belt.

By the way teddy, not sure if i've got the right person but I think i may have purchased my CB aerial mount off ya about 3 and half years ago? We met up just off the A500, i drove over from Crewe and you showed me the best way to route the cable through the door!
 
HI Its due to be examined for the leak next tuesday,anyway it might seem a bit daft but i have ordered an inlet manifold gasket a water pump and a timing belt.On the hoses i cannot see any leaks,so that leaves me with the header tank or the thermostat housing leaking.
 
Is there a coolant pipe behind the water pump, and below the inlet manifold? I have the same problem, and it has been suggested that this pipe may have corroded through old coolant or incorrect balance of coolant/water ratio

Yes, there's a badly coated steel pipe that runs from the gearbox end of the head into the back of the water pump. A lot of these are starting to get a bit dodgy with age now.

I have now found the problem. A cracked thermostat housing where it enters the area behind the coolant pump.
