Just thinking of getting a silly horn for the fender (yeah, I know, but i do fancy a truck horn :) )
Soo, need a compressor, do the standard ones have a reservoir, or would i have to make sure i got one that did, I also want it to be able to double up as a tyre inflator, with possibly an air line connection in the side of the sat box or summat.
 
Yes you will need a res . as the smaller compressors eg tyre pump type are very low volume although capable of high pressure , this would also aid tyre inflation as the pump would be buil;ding pressure whilst you were going fromtyre to tyre
 
as in air con compressor?? how does that work then, I thought the system had to be pressurised (ie full of a/c gas) for the clutch to kick in, otherwise, thats not a bad idea, just need one form a disco or summat, with the appropriate belt, the mount is there for it already :)

Its simple enough , you wire it bi passing the pressure switch . Things you need to take into account , the air coming out of the compressor can get very hot , so need to select a good hose to go to tank. You need either to wire it thru a pressure limit switch , or at the very least fit a safety valve although better to fit both as very high pressures can be reached. A drip oiler on inlet , or minimum keep a check on oil in compressor .They will run on original charge of oil for quite a long time . They are very effective esp comparing with 12v ones . HTSH
 
I used the gubbins from an old compressor and the clutch is just 12v so I used an ignition live that goes to the pressure switch so when the receiver is up to maximum pressure it turns the clutch off and when it drops bellow the set pressure it kicks back in. I'll post photos if you interested?
 
if you wouldn't mind, that'd be great, bits should be easy enough to get hold of, few pnumatic places round me, and iuts not like its hooooge pressue
 
You can make a storage air tank from PVC pipe and end caps glued on, use schedule 40 pipe. to can drill and tape it for your air fitting fittings . just find a spot where you want it a 4-6" dia 12-18" long will hold alot of air
 
I used a c02 extinguisher body and just screwed an adapter into the filler end . No risk of going pop:eek:
 
what sort of pressure does it need to run? thinking around 80-100 would give a cuffing loud horn, and be more than enough for inflating tyres, the size of the tank would then determine its suitability for tools.
If i go with the AC pump, that's more space inn the seatbox for the tank
 
around the 100psi is plenty , on my 110 the cylinder is up alongside the chassis under front passenger floor , with the hose coupling in the footwell , so protected from dirt etc . :)
 
I'm going to get a Matt savage compressor then mate it to a pair if old lorry air tanks, plenty of storage for air

My onboard air set up.....

The compressor gubbins for pressure relief valve, shut off and outlets....

The dive bottle mounted where the dickie seat was...

The sanden a/c pump off a 300tdi es.......

The extra tensioner you also need....


All plumbed in with fittings from my local hydraulic centre and tool station.:)
I've got a pipe still to fit to extend the air intake on the pump and a little drop of oil every now and again is all the lube it needs.

TANKS!!!!! What are you going to be running? My dive bottle pumps my 31:10.5:15`s fine also will run a few air tools, unless you want to run a 1/2 " gun I don't think you would need that much volume mate.
