hi again. need some info. as some of you may be aware of my previous posts.on my conversion from auto to manual on a 1995 disco 1. well its all done and runs and drives great. now what i need to know is in the conversion i used a disco2 r380 gearbox. i need to know which wires are for the speedo on the box and were are they located. because on the original auto box they were located on the transferbox by the brake drum. also would be good if you know what colour the wires are im looking for.cause at the moment i have no speedo.

on my old box the speedo connector was by the brake drum a black connector.but on this disco2 r380 v8 box its not there so were is it i found the reverse switch and 4x4 light but cant find the speedo connection

There lies the problem, the disco 2 box does not have speedo drive as it is taken from abs

so is there no way of me doing it. i must admit ihad to do a few modifications for the box to fit.which were i had to fabricate a n/s gearbox mounting.plus modify the hi/low to get the difflock to work.

Only way I can see is using old gearbox rear housing and speedo drive on new box something I considered doing on one of my spares

if youve fitted disco 2 t/box either fit disco 1 t/box or swap speedo housing but care needs to be taken as swapping speedo housings can alter diff bearing preload, theres a raised spigot that pushes on diff bearing race housings often have different heights of spigot

So u are not using the D1 transfer box then.

no ive used the box off a disco 2. but i dident think to swap transfer boxes. untill it was in as i thought the speedo system were all the same

I should be doing disco td5 to defender spec tomorrow-if I get chance-will take pictures

Ratty has a couple of pictures, to convert a discovery 2 speedo drive less lt230 to earlier spec.

The rear output flange needs removing
Remove rear output casing
Gently tap output shaft out with hide hammer
On speedo driveless lt230 the spacer is bigger-simply swap for smaller spacer and speedo drive gear.

If your old transfer box output bearing is trashed you can swap it over to speedo hole housing-most important thing is remove oil seal and circlip and hit BEARING OUTER, NOT INNER.

Later boxes used instant gasket to seal.

You will need to swap high low housing

I instant gasket felt on drive flange and refit nut.
You will need to fit cdl lobe as only early disco 2 had cdl but not factory fit
