Hi all,
I am hoping someone can help me with a little starting problem?
I have an old V reg Freelander with the Land Rover turbo Diesel engine, and it seems a bit iffy on starting with a cold engine, usually first thing in the morning. It starts reluctantly and then wont rev above tickover for the first few seconds, and then its fine. Is this a Landrover thing or do I need to pump the accelerator? Could it be in need of a new fuel filter? Or is it sumit more serious?

When you start it do you turn the key, wait for a few seconds and then turn the engine over, or do you turn it over immediately?

When you start it keep your foot off the pedal until it fires up, and then it should be OK.

Jeez! I'm responding to an fffffn GL post!!

Are you waiting for the heater plugs light to go out first?

Hi oldseadog and angeloc,
I do wait for the glowplugs to cycle before tryin to start it
I gave the accelerator a push before starting it after work today and when it started, it reved a little higher so I was wondering if it was a choke thing? or a fuel pump problem possibly?

Errr, Mandy, it's a diesel and it don't have a choke thing!

Now listen carefully ... Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin ...

KEEP YER FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL WHEN YOU ARE STARTING IT UP!! OK? :doh:

You would help it along a bit if you did put your foot on the clutch pedal so that you are only turning the engine and not the gearbox.

Just for information, the engine is the big bit underneath the lid that is in front of you, and the gearbox is the bit with a waggly stick on it so that you can make it go either forwards backwards or into the nearest ditch.

I'm having a similar prob - have replaced the glowplugs but still behaving the same. Maybe the engine temp sensor after some forum searching? I'll look for this next...!

It definately SHOULDNT be like that. I have a 99 2.0 diesel with 135k on it and it fires instantly after 1 glow plug heat - no rough or lumpy idling, and the ability to rev as high as possible ( not that youd do that when your engines cold???)

Have you serviced it/checked the glow plugs lately?

There's a slim chance of it being the ECT sensor but more likely to be injection timing out, often after a cam and FIP belt change.

My bet is it needs a new injector or 2.

Get it on a leak-back test.
