Hi I've got 2003 freelander, 2dr v6.

Cylinder 6 has a misfire. I confirmed the newly replaced coil is not receiving a signal. So the problem is not the coil or the sparkplug, the issue is that the coil receives no electricity.

I am not sure if I should replace the wire that connects to back of coil6 - looks like I would have to replace the whole set. I can see they plug into a black box behind the battery. I've got a mechanic who is willing to help test with an ampmeter to see if the harness in the box is spitting a signal or not, but I might need a wiring diagram for him. (not sure where to find that...im looking)

I really appreciate any advice on the topic, not getting to work today was a little stressful!

I have a little bit of paperwork about this, according to my info coil six should have 3 wires to it
brown/pink battery live
black earth
black/blue the ecu signal your referring to, that connects to pin 31 at engine ecu
you could try putting a temporary wire from there to the coil just to rule it out

Thanks Matthew! After testing today, I found that no signal is coming from the computer when I plugged a new wire into spot8; this where black/blue is connected. I know you said pin31 but this was the only black/blue wire in the box and to confirm my test I plugged it into cylinder5's spot (found from wire colors) and got a spark.

So it looks like the computer is not sending a signal for cylinder6. Does this mean I need a new engine computer? This looks like the originating spot for the signal?

Yes it looks like computer fault then, maybe the original coil was faulty and damaged the ecu.
Getting your ecu tested and repaired might be a better option than replacing it as I'm not sure if a second hand one would have to be set up to work on your car and a new one could be quite expensive

A friend who is landrover mechanic just informed me that a used ecu will not work in my car and i'd have to get a new one...this is totally true?

A used ecu will probably not work because of the immobilizer system, not saying you could not get round this but might take specialist equipment.

There is a company just next to me that can test ecus but I'm in Kent, England.

I think they have more offices around the world though I will have a look for you
