My 93 RRC is running rich. Starts fine when cold but hard starting after it warms up. Code reader below the seat shows "14", coolant temp sensor. Replaced sensor and still won't clear. Plugged another correct ECU to it and got the same result. All I can think is there is a break in the wire somewhere between the sensor and the ECU? Someone said it was O2 sensors, which it could be, but why would it kick out the code 14? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Coolant sensors has a varying output, but is through earth, so I should imagine the wire is earthing somewhere between the sensor and the ECU, either on the engine or where the wiring goes into the body.

Edit, does this model have two sensors, one for gauge and one for ECU??
 
You have the digi read out under the seat, lucky bugger...
There are 2 temp sensors for the ecu , water and fuel, plus one in the front of the engine block for the gauge.
Which one did you change.
The ecu wire is not so robust so check that. Not sure it runs to earth as there are 2 cables on there not one like a gauge sensor.
If it's running rich though I would be considering the lambda
 
If it's running rich, it will be getting a signal that the engine coolant is cold so the ECU will signal for a rich mix. But it seems this one is running rich all the time, so it's being fed a "cold" signal despite what the engine coolant temp actually is.

It could be the lambda is dead and is defaulted to rich running, but curious that the fault code is pinging a coolant sensor fault....
 
Thanks for the reply. The temp gauge work great and wiring looks fine and the fuel temp seems to be fine as well. I thought about lamba/o2 sensors but the ECU code is telling me it is the coolant temp sensor. I will have to see if it is earthing somewhere and chase it down. Thanks
 
Have you actually measured the resistance of the temp thermistor? if you are convinced it is coolant temp sensor try the paperclip trick. Take the plug off the thermistor and bridge with a paperclip or similar, this will make the ecu think the engine is hot.

Also, if you didn't clear the ecu fault code it will just stay there so perhaps a quick reset would be sensible start?
