Right guys, Ive got a 1986 90 with a 200TDI Disco Engine in it. I've recently become aware that my clutch pedal is high and to add to this, I arrived home from work with a new noise. Ive got a rattle coming from around the Gearbox when the clutch pedal up and the gearbox in neutral at tick over... as if I've not quite changed gear fully (if that makes sense?).

Now after speaking to a few people from work (before I got the noise) its been suggested I change the Clutch Slave Cylinder before a clutch change just to rule it out to see if it sorts the high clutch pedal. But looking at the documents I got with my Landrover, this was changed only 6 Months ago? now I have this slight noise does this indicate something more serious or just a clutch change?

Any help/advice would be appreciated!

Clutch slave wont change pedal height at all, pop top pedal box cover off (6 screws) and check if the two push rod nuts have come loose also make sure theres just a tiny bit of free play, then when driving along a nice flat road applying a bit of power just gently press the clutch pedal if revs climb up with only a tiny bit of movement clutch is goosed.

Worth checking that master cylinder is adjusted right
Clutch plate rattle from friction plate springs?
Clutch fork could be worn and pulling through on its knuckle you'll find out soon if it's that

Ok, its too dark outside to start stripping things and see what I'm looking at.
So I took it out for a run an came to the conclusion that the clutch is worn and with a slight movement of the pedal the engine revs up.

Still worth checking the Master Cylinder? if so how do you check the adjustment?

Im hoping its friction plate rattle after looking at a couple of videos. We'll soon find out either way I think looking at the way things are going.

If you end up doing a clutch then do the fork and release bearing plus don't miss the bronze bush in the flywheel
Bear in mind diesel clutches can rattle even new ones, the noise goes away when the pedal is pressed and comes back when lifted it's an unwanted characteristic often seen especially on heavy duty types

Yes that is the exact characteristic I've got at the moment, but it has only just really got noticeable.

Looks like I've got a few things on my shopping list, I'm also going to get the rear crank seal changed and do the engine mounts at the same time.

My money is on that noise being the spigot bearing, that is what it was on mine.

Worth getting an HD clutch release arm if you are doing the clutch if it doesn't already have one. I have one spare if you fancy a trip to Ashbourne.
