hi all,
looking for some advice on my 1990 defender 90 with a 2.5td engine. gonna replace the clutch soon. is it easier to take the gearbox or engine out to to renew the clutch?
thanks
peter

2.5td is a simple block to remove but I think box is easier. Also where are you?
you sure it aint a 200tdi? dont think they did 2.5td in 1990

up in sunny scotland, glasgow. it's defo a 2.5td. the chassis number says its a 1989 so must have been one of the last ones i.e late registered before the 200 tdi was introduced.

ok i'll give it a go. if i don't get back on here within a day you'll know i'm jammed under a gearbox. looks heavy.

weighs a ton mate best have another pair of hands around. you can lift it with a tranny jack or a engine hoist through the cab.

Depends what equipment and facilities you have access to. The gearbox move lying on your back rolling about on the ground sure seems like a pain when you could lift the engine out and 95% of the work can be done from above.

When I did my 2.5NA I did both, when I took the gearbox out I had a 4 post and was semi sheltered even at that it was not easy to manhandle a complete gearbox/transfer box assembly about, the second time I took the engine out, lifted it right out, lots of light and space and it was a breeze.

I recently put a new gearbox into my 90 and I did it outside, but this time I took the seatbox out, I was then able to stand over the boxes and just lift them out; extra hands are useful if you can get them and save having to rig up lifting gear, had I not had people about I would have done the seatbox method and used a engine crane through the door. I went for this option because it was -7 out, ice on the ground and I didn't fancy rolling about on my back too much.

I am a crane thru the passenger door, slide the box back fan myself.

Far less to remove and no fluids to disturb.

well that's it all done now. the landy lives to see another day. ended up lifting the engine out. only took a couple of hours to remove. just thought the gearbox looked far too heavy to drop down. its now got me in the mood for changing it for a 200tdi seeings it was so easy to come out.
