hello folks i've noticed when i press the clutch in i can hear a hissing noise:confused:
i first heard it about a month ago but i'm sure it's either getting louder or i'm not turning the radio up loud enough
the clutch doesn't feel heavey or anything plenty of fluid in res, but it is now a bit of a niggle.
does anyone else get this?
is it normal?
or am i worryin about f/all?
your expert veiws would be much appreciated:D

oh 4got to say it does it louder when i press the pedel at low revs ie to pull up or park

Release bearing getting noisy.
Bad luck ....

spent last weekend helping a mate replace the clutch fork.

it's possible for a DIY mechanic to get into the bell housing to replace the bearing, but dont be shy with your parts and give the old girl a full clutch overhaul including the fork as these are prone to wearing through.

you dont want to have to spend more than one weekend in your life lying under your disco doing that job and you wont want to do it single handed..!

thanx m8
but is it likely to go soon or could it last for ages yet
dont want to start takin the bell housing out unless i really have to iv'e heard it's a right bastrd of a job
but then again i dont want it to go tits up when my caravans on tha back on the way to cornwall in summer
oh fook:eek:

Who knows???

broken fork is a bummer though!

you might get an indication of it's state by taking off the slave and givin the pushrod a waggle????

I had the thrust bearing squeeling for months/years in my old P6 rover, never botherd with changing it till i had the engine out to do the timing chains, then i did the lot just 'cos I could see it..

you need another person, the box is exreamly heavy, i always put a strap round it and have the engine hoist comming in the passenger door to support raise and lower it.

ang about before he starts pulling his clutch out

he said he hears a hissing - when was the last time you heard a clutch release bearing hiss ?

and YES - bearings can make a sortof hissing noise.

that may be true - but the normal first signs of the clutch release bearing getting tired is a rattle not a hiss

and even when it does start to rattle you've normally got at least another 10K before it needs anything doing to it

just didnt want the OP to think he has to perform open heart surgery on his clutch

yup - agree - a hissing bearing is normally the sound a GOOD one makes. as yu say - ones on the way out tend to rattle.

I have to agree with you guys on this one.

Maybe this is a classic case of "if it isn't lying broken in bits on the floor, then DON'T FIX IT".

Keep driving. Chances are you'll get used to it anyway.

ok thanx for that folks.
think i'll av ta get used to it cos as charlsey said if it aint broke don't fix it.
no point spending a wkend under it when i could still be driving it.
and again thanx

My clutch release bearing has been making 'grinding noises' not really that loud, and I can 'feel' it as well through my foot (if that makes sense) for the last 40k and it hasn't got any worse !!!

I'm going to hang on until the clutch needs doing and bite the bullet and do the whole lot in one go !!! (unless it falls to bits half way up the M6 in the middle of the night - Arrgghhhh

(but that's why I got recovery :D )
