how long has oil been in it ? if a good while change it ,and check condition of old you drain out

Are yue sure it's the gearbox?? Transfer box also can make many different noises !! Drop the gear oil into a clean container look for any metal !! Tiny swarf is normal but big bits may mean a strip down ! Same with gearbox drop oil check filter etc refill with good oil ATF in gearbox 90 in tranny ! While you are all oily check all ujs in props haft grease em etc , change diff oils refil with 90 , try it !! Release bearing also can get very noisy !!!!!!

Thankyou for response-looks like first job is changing the transmission fluid-it's not so much a noise as a jerk and seems to occur when I've been in slow moving traffic for a while-perhaps old oil getting less efficient when hot?-thanks again-will feed back result
