I have a defender 110 Puma 2008, 40,000 miles.

The gear change has become clunky. Irrespective of how careful I am with the clutch. The clunk seems to be coming from the rear. Noise also occurs when I depress/ release the accelerator at slow speed.

Could something need adjustment?

Mines always been clunky, didn't know they were supposed to be different.

Just to tidy up this thread. Problem was due to damaged universal joint (rear). About £50 and vehicle drives fine now.

fyi, buy gkn for around a tenner and you can fit with a vice

How noisy can these things get? I've had a really BAD clanky clunk (and a squeak) on my 90 which I can't properly investigate (tools, jacks etc in storage atm) - it sounds like the front axle's falling off but I can't make anything rattle or even move by poking around underneath.. it's at it's worst on overrun or trickling along on a lane where the load is on/off.. was wondering if a knackered UJ would be capable of making enough noise?

can be a harsh clunk as drive engages. but i'm surprised you couldn't wobble it if it was the uj.

when i bought my 110, one of the ujs was totally knackered, all the rollers had fallen out on two sides and it moved all over the shop.

Sounds like a UJ has gone. If it has, it's only a matter of time/miles before complete failure - which can be catastrophic. I wouldn't drive it much further.

If you want to eliminate the UJ's (for safety) just drop the propshafts off, you can the assess them properly (and grease them)

tbh there might've been load on the prop when I checked, I will redo it

No it has got worse recently it won't see any more recreational use until it's sorted.. or at least identified.

If I can get anywhere with inspecting them on the vehicle I'll risk it a few miles and get them changed as I have no facilities/tools available atm..
