Hi has anyone any idea why my injectors sometime sounds like a machine gun ( R-A-T-A-T-A-T-T-A-T ) and another time as smooth as silk.I can go out one day and the engine is as smooth as silk the next day they may be perfect or they can sound like a machine gun.It doesn't effect the running of the engine, It seems to be smoother when the weather is warm \I have had mike from dynachip do a re-map and the engine runs perfect no more turbo lag and nice crisp acceleration its just annoying any ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi I am back with my noisy injectors. since my original post I have removed the egr valve and fitted a k&n air filter and put diesel cleaner in fuel tank every time I fill up but every morning when I go out for about 4-5 miles they are really clattery then they clear and it runs fine also if I stop and switch of for about 20mins and re-start once again they are fine it drives ok its just not knowing what's causing it that's driving me bonkers I don't know what to try next apart from turning the radio up full blast and ignoring it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It sounds to me like it's temperature related. If I were you I would re-set the injectors to 1 turn out and see how that feels.

How much time do you let it warm up, before you drive off first time for the day.

Thanks how do you re-set the injectors is it a big job

Hi TT, no it's not a big job at all but you would be wise to download a copy of Land Rovers workshop manual RAVE, to follow the procedure. Or buy one off Ebay.

It sounds a bit like mine, if its been sat for 4+ hours mine will diesel knock if I pull away with only a little throttle, will do it once maybe twice and then fine until I leave it sitting for 4+ hours again, also noticed when I first start if I lift the revs very slightly 900rpm it will misfire and smoke, this again open does it one off before I pull away other wise drives fine.

Thanks thebiglad and Thor1950 Sounds like re-setting the injectors may be too big a job for a kerbside mechanic like, me but I will download the RAVE manual and have a look. I will also give it few mins to warm up and see how it goes. Thanks again.

its easy to tighten the injectors,
you remove the rocker cover, loosen the locking nut on top of each injector,
then turn the crank with a bar and socket until the cam lobe for each injector is at its highest,
then working on the injector with the cam lobe highest, tighten the top screw on the injector until you feel the injector bottom out, then turn the screw back one full turn (360 degrees) and tighten the locking nut.
repeat the procedure for each injector then re assemble removed parts

Sorry for the hijack guys, but thanks. This probably explains the rattly noise I get when mine Disco is driven from cold - once she warms up it goes away. I always put it down to a cold diesel engine, so never thrashed her from go.

Diff.

+1 with you on that. My diesel sounds like a bunch of bolts in a coffee can until all is warmed to operating temp. Just the characteristics of a cold diesel:)

rattly noise could be hydrolic tappets,
the injectors when not set correct make a metalic popping noise I find, although its hard to describe a noise

The noise I have is when cracking the throttle open - not full bore, just partial, pottering off the estate, further down the road when she's warmed up and I'm using the turbo fully then no probs.

That one full turn back caters for the thermal expansion I take it? Much like setting valve clearances.
