I am restoring my 1994 RR Classic, which, as usual, needs a new upper tailgate. I would be grateful for anyone's views on the following questions:

(1) Aluminium or steel? My local restorer (who is doing most of the work) wonders whether aluminium is rigid enough.

(2) Which manufacturer (of either type) produce the best products. I would be grateful to hear of anyone's personal experience of quality, fit, etc.

Many thanks in advance

personally i prefer the feel of an original steel one, the ally ones i have come across while looking fine and never rusting just feel a bit lightweight and flimsy

Prefer plastic or glass one's meself..

Thanks for your guidance, everyone.
From a bit of research, it looks like I don't have much choice anyway - steel ones seem to be virtually unobtainable.

Thanks again

I was really pleased with my aluminium replacement from these guys and their customer service was very good. Unfortunately the garage I used (not LR specialists!) made a bit of a bad job of it and damaged the horizontal seal that sits under the lip of the upper tailgate, so that it could not be reused (the seal is not included in this kit and they seem hard to come by so make sure you salvage your old one if you can!).

So if you are relying on someone else to do it, make sure they know what they are doing!

P.S. If anyone knows where I get one of those seals, I'll be forever indebted to you!

ok , been down that route, and bar buying a tailgate I couldnt get one, especially as mine was for a 2 door and the rubber is very slightly differnt at the ends ( a trim with a knife sorts that easily)

anyway long story short and leng the of the rubber from across the top of the bulkhead in the engine bay (that the bonnet seals to) cut to length and glued on with black sikaflex works a treat and withstood the carwash test easy!
