Sorry if this is a stupid question but i will soon be looking for a defender 110 to replace my old disco and im fine with all the usual checks when buying a car apart from checking for play in the drive train

So whats the best to check for excessive wear in the axle and drive shaft splines ?

Thanks

Well, it is usually more obvious in the propshaft joints, diffs, splines in the axles themselves and suchlike so I tend to find you can feel it best of you take the handbrake off and try and rotate the propshafts by hand. Also clunking noises as drive is taken up as you take your foot off the clutch can be a bit of a giveaway. Plus of course excessive noise from the transmission.

The good news is that all these bits and pieces are not too hard for the keen amateur to replace, so it's not catastrophic if there is wear, just more little jobs to do.

cheers i dont mind buying one with wear in the drive train but if i know i can try and knock the price down a bit !

A 110 is far easier to replace transmission parts than a Disco.. As long as chassis, bulkhead etc are good then you can't go far wrong, although like he said getting underneath and having a feel of props etc, play/clunks when taking up drive, vibrations, growls etc
