Just thought i'd have a tidy up on the 110, tried a Dremmal with a fine wire brush on the checker plate, going to take a silly amount of time to complete now that I've done a patch!:der:

Anyone know a better way to clean it up?

scotchbrite will work. you could also try an angle grinder with a wire brush on, or blast cleaning or some sort.... "sandblasting", but not done with sand (!).

ice blasting works well but its expensive

i could see an angle grinder with a wire brush getting a bit out of control? and potentially damaging paintwork etc

They make a spray on wash off cleaner for aluminium that will brighten it up and not effect paint work. Several on youtube

If the Chequered plate is Aluminium the don't use a wire brush! Ive found that Silvo which is recommended for Aluminium works very well if its not got that white corrosion :D

Have used toothpaste on chequer plate brings it up a treat and smells nice too, also works well at cleaning up silver jewellery....:)

Will give all a try in order of least destruction!

other half has B&D mouse sander with a polishing pad, might try that to!

Foam pad with a directional polisher and cutting paste. Destroys the pads pretty quickly though but brightens it up nice, thing is is just oxides again and looks dirty.

If you want mirror finish you want autosol. It takes forever though.

Yep, Autosol takes forever, works better on chrome. I found soaking the plates in Coke overnight worked ok.

I did the chequer plate on my truck with it a few years back. You don't realise just how much dirt is in the metal until you use the stuff.:eek::eek:
