when road testing the s3 this afternoon it didn't feel right at all handling very badly, luckily I got back onto the drive to find my passenger side front wheel barely hanging on with two nuts left at the end of their thread.

must have forgotten to fully tighten that wheel, had a walk round the block hoping to see the three missing ones in a neat pile and visible from 100 yards, no such luck, did manage to find one and a 5p piece to put towards the cost of two new nuts

could have been embarrassing trying to explain my wheeless landy in the middle of the road

Did the same with the disco a while back ,went to the local town (bout 10 miles) and thought this is handling even worse than usual and when i got back i found i hadnt tightened all the nuts !! i was lucky and didnt lose any but it was close

Pretty serious oversight. But don't feel to bad i once saw a mechanic drive a car out of a garage after doing a service and both the front wheels fell off. No nuts on them at all. So it can be done.

Lucky escape. My first LWB S2a was a rusty old dog. I discovered the actual set screws were loose! Tack welded them to the drum.

The set screws aren't structural and just hold the drum in place during assembly.

I think he might mean the wheel studs that the nuts go on.
But maybe not, he does say he welded them to the drum!

At best that is going to make changing the shoes loads of fun......at worst it'll hold the wheel off the face of the drum

indeed I did, least they had the excuse it was someone elses fault

pure luck that my trip round the block finished, it had become so obvious that something serious was going on that I didn't do another lap.

pity they are not the same size as the s1's I have a few spare, will have another look for the other two tomorrow, must be there somewhere but I'm not going to look under all the parked cars it will take hours. Ordered a full set of 20 off the bay for just short of £9 including postage.

while I am typing it has just dawned on me I can use the ones off the spare mount on the rear door till the replacements arrive

Yeah I meant the studs. It was years ago. I must have welded them to the axle rather than the drum. I'm going back 30 odd years

Lucky is right, I was also lucky pic attached is how I found my wheel after a 15 mile drive home on Friday, it felt like I was driving a boat knew something was up! Found wheel nut amazingly!!

More seriously, had one of the little prats in the neighborhood do that to my 88 long ago. Ruined the wheel but thankfully I caught it before the damn wheel came off.

One thing to watch out for is looseing if a wheel doesn't seat quite right. Had that happen on a D1 once - since then it's a trip round the block and retorque before certifying the car fit for duty.

I was playing on the double entendre somewhat

jacked it up before tightening, robbed two of the nuts from the rear door fitting, seems to be ok, had a couple of sneaky trips round the block whilst it was quiet, checked for tightness on return, considerable improvement on before, dare I say it could be mot time this week.

managed to break the washer part of the wiper switch whilst fiddling with the dash, £50 for a new switch or thereabouts, had a spare press and hold switch so I just wired the washer leads to that, jobs a good un
