Evening,

I heard a funny knocking sound around the rear passenger side wheel so jacked it up, took the wheel off and need to fit a new shock absorber. Anyways, I decided to have a look at the chassis behind the wheel and I've uncovered a fairly worrying hole. a screwdriver went through it easy enough, and its the only bit of rot that I've managed to find. The rest of the chassis is in really good nick.

What are my best options?

1) Weld a patch over it?
2) Fill the hole and grind it down?
3) Can I have a new rear chunk of chassis welded on?

Whilst I'm talking about chassis, does anybody know of a good chassis fabricater besides Richards? If I were to buy a new one in the future, I'd hope to pay less than 700 quid if that's possible?

Thanks in advance

You could probably buy a decent second hand mig welder for less than a garage would charge to do the job, then teach yer sen to weld, its not too hard and wire and gas is cheap too. I have never had the need to weld up til buying an early 90 and ive mastered it now an mi 90s a propper little minter now! All ya need is mig, angle grinder, drill/wirewheel/ hamerite/ underseal oh an some steel too, proddin an early 90 chassis will nearly always open up a can of worms as i have learnt but i would like to buy another now to get stuck into! Good look:)

I would go around it with a hammer first, give the chassis a bash, when the hammer goes through it or makes a bad dent, your in trouble, then get it all patched up. Also knocks all the surface rust of nicely ready for a coat of waxoil.

Thanks for the advice Carp!

If I do take it to a welder, what are they most likely to do? Cut it out, fill it and then grind it down, or just whack a patch over it? I'm going to give it a good once over to try and find as many bits and bobs as I can before I take it in.
