been getting up close and personal with my s3 chassis ready for taking it to the mot, found a hole about 1mm wide and 2 inches long in the chassis near the edge of the bottom face above where the exhaust exits.

is any hole a fail or does it have to be close to something like a spring hanger?

hadn't realised the chassis had the number of patches it has but then I have had the car 6 years so that's more than long enough for a chassis to develop a hole.
 
Any way that sounds more of a slit than a hole, this is a hole:screaming_bug_eye_f

if its only 1mm wide, could just run a bead of weld down it to seal it,

or if bodging's your game just fill it with paint :D
 
You may find that 1 mm hole turns int something rather bigger when wire brushed they always start looking small

yep that's definitely a hole :D

have to agree mine does look more of a slit, the two inches is the something bigger, it was a lot smaller before I started poking at it with a screwdriver, the bits either side are solid so it does seem funny. might just stick some plastic metal in it and see if it passes.

with the number of plates, mainly round the spring hangers front and rear, and the looks of other chassis on here people have cut open I shall probably get a galvo and start build a rolling chassis over the winter.

I would love to find a rusty s3 with a petrol engine, stick the engine and box in the s1 and use the axles etc to build a rolling chassis with brakes and steering then just transfer the rest of the bits off the s3 next summer.
 
that looks a bit far gone for me, not bothered about the body as such since it will essentially be donating its axles and running gear to the rolling chassis for my existing s3 and its box and engine to the s1 so I can have full synchro. but the axles and everything on that one look well rusty. think I would prefer one that was "running" and failed its mot needing extensive chassis repairs.

alternatively the six pot series gearbox will bolt straight on to the 2l s1 engine I have so I am told, iirc it was owl that said that, apologies if it wasn't. I did see one a few months back but wasn't in a position to move on it. Then I could probably just get a couple of axles, with a new chassis and springs to make the base of my s3 resto
 
I wonder if someone caught it with a 1mm slitting disk in a grinder before?
 
I have been meaning to learn for some time. hoping to buy one of those r tech migs this month and have a go. naturally I won't go near the chassis till I am competent, no rush to get the s3 back on the road, managed to insure the nipper to drive the s1 for around £230 fully comp.
 
I found a 50x1mm good patch on my chassis. The rest is futtoxed.

Is this a record.

Oh no that's a plastic disc with a hole. :eek:

my s1 chassis is in better condition than the s3, maybe 50's steel was better quality than what they used in the 70's
