Hi Guys,

I have a 1988 90 which has had a 200tdi conversion.

The whole engine is out of a defender but it has a discovery timing cover on it which means that the belts, hoses etc do not align correctly.

I am wanting to change the timing cover to complete the engine to a full defender 200tdi spec.

Having looked at what is going to be involved in doing this change I do not feel Like I am capable of doing this on my own and I am looking for help to see if anybody would like to help me in the process.

I already have the majority of the parts, if anybody on here could possibly help that would be amazing. I cant imagine the price of a garage doing this as there is a lot of work involved

:confused: So has your engine never ran? Which belts and hoses don't align?
 
I would say its nice to have the real deal, but in this case the cost is surely going to out way any benefits, Im sure theres someone out there who does hoses that are made to fit the disco lump into the defender chassis, ebay I think.
 
I converted a disco lump to defender with a mate of mine, it's a lot easier with the engine out the car, if I remember correctly it's not just the timing case that differs I think the turbo is mounted differently and it needs the defender oil pipes from the turbo to the sump. Also the metal fuel injection pipes are different. The defender has a different alternator mounting bracket, so lots of little differences, which is fine if you have the knackered defender engine to swop from but will get expensive if you don't
 
It is in the car and runs perfectly fine.

Has the correct mounted turbo and alternator bracket. It literally is just the timing cover that is off a disco which I am not to sure why. This meant that it has a non standard radiator and config with the pipes etc.

I would imagine if it still has the Discovery timing cover then it probably still has the extra idle pulley which defender doesn't have

I made my 200tdi from a disco one with a knackered head and a defender one with a cracked block, it’s a surprising number of bits to swap to get it all defender spec!
Does look factory under the bonnet though, which was the only reason I did it.

Not sure it’s worth the hassle of sourcing each bit independently.

If the OP has all the bits he should do it, looks smarter and is ‘right’

Most of the parts have been done.

To my understanding all I need to do is:

Change the timing cover
Get defender injector pipes
200tdi rad ( Yes all 200tdi rads are the same but this one has another one)
defender 200tdi Radiator frame
And I think there is a bracket for the fuel injection pump that I need to get

After these have been changed it will just be like a defender 200tdi from the factory
