Dear all,

My 2002 Td4 just broke down. The AA has diagnosed it as faulty rear fuel Pump. I am planning to change this pump myself. I am wandering how to remove the outer black ring that holds down the pump. Any help would be greatful.

Are you are sure that you have two pumps, as 2002 was the change over to the single pump in the rear wheel arch?. If you have a pump in the tank there is a special tool for removing this ring but you can normally knock it round to remove it. Hope this helps

Yes I do have two fuel pumps. The faulty one is under the back seat, if you undo the carpet it covered by a metal plate held on by 6 phillips scews.

The pump itself is not making a buzzing sound like normal so it does sound like its dead. The front pump is working according to the AA patrol guy.

If I hammer at the plate with help of a flat head screw driver would this get it undone?? If not where can I buy this tool from. Main dealer??

I have just removed my pump to check the filters. I first marked the position of the ring with tippex. Using a large flat bladed screwdriver, I tapped the raised pieces on the ring using a heavy hammer on the back of the screwdriver. I went from side to side to even out the force. There is a canister at the base of the pump which is full of fuel, so have a large container ready! (if you tip the pump from the vertical it will spill out). Be careful not to catch the float for the fuel level sender when withdrawing the pump.
The sealing ring will need to be inserted into the tank before the new pump is replaced. Tighten up the ring until the marks line up.
The other reason for removing the pump was to check on the type of pump used. I have taken the dimensions and will try and source just the pump before it fails (I have just replaced the front one after 65,000 miles).

But surely someone has done this before? So, instead of re-inventing the wheel so to speak, has anyone found a supplier for just the pump?

One of the tasks I undertook was to change the fuel pump (the one under the rear seat). It took half and hour Only because I paused for a cuppa lolol. Anyhow, I also used a hammer and blunt ended screwdriver to remove the cover as this was the only method feasible, so I am afraid Supra-Boy, I do not think there is a specialist 'tool' to remove this item. Good luck

best tool Ive found to remove the locking ring is, an ajustable water pump spanner, you can buy them in B & Q, there used for the nuts on the water pump on your central heating system, buy the B & Q value version, they work a treat!!
