I am going to attempt to change the glow plugs on my p38 dse at the weekend. I was wandering if anyone has any tips if I have trouble getting the glow plugs off? also how will I know if the leads are knackered?

Be careful not to break any off, go easy with the force, wiggle back and forth if necessary and apply some Plus Gas. Leads should be OK.
 
where is the cheapest/best place to get the gaskets from? are they the round ones that go on the bottom of the manifold? also what tools will I need to do this, im going to buy all the tools today at once as i was changing the rocker cover gaskett last weekend and ended up going to halfords 4 times to get different tools. :)

Deep 12 mm 3/8" socket, 8 mm socket. Long extensions and a wobbler. A bit of grease to stick the terminal nuts into the 8 mm socket with so they don't fall where you will never find them. Ideally Copaslip for plug threads if you ever want to get them out again. DO NOT overtighten plugs a gentle nip will do.

True ive had mine off 3 times now not needed my spare set

tools needed screw driver 3/8 ratchet telescopic magnet 6mm socket 8mm deep socket extension bar a nuckle joint and a 13 mm socket and a 13mm spanner remove air intake ,turbo hose ,inlet manifold Carefull of plug connector and map hose in manifold early ally type and egr pipe and cam vac pipe on later plastic type

Each time you undo manifold nuts with socket just before the thread ends use magnet to remove nut you won't drop it then ;) same on replacement use magnet no need to fiddle about .the same goes for the little 6mm glow plug wire nuts .

On cylinder 5and 6 you will need the spanner from underneath to loosen nuts on air manifold and release with fingers

As for glow plugs once wires off deep socket extension and ratchet however cylinders 1and 2 require the knuckle joint in the extension bar .

Ps don't trap no 4 injector wire on reassembly :):)
 
yes it was a fiddly job i lost a few nuts along the way and had to make 2 trips to halfords to get the replacement, my local 4x4 garage wanted £230 to change them so I am happy i have saved the money! :)

I did say use the telescopic magnet your know better next time :)

You were advised how not to lose nuts. Does nobody ever listen. Spot of grease in the sockets you will never lose a nut. :(
