Ok so i got given a 12000 champion winch,

I know they are rated as being sh*t and this is probably why is doesnt work!

I would like to get it working but if I'm honest i have no idea.

Where can i take it to get it checked out/fixed around J28 of the M1 area.

How do i test the solenoids and how do i test the motor?

I pulled the whole thing apart as it wouldn't freely spin by hand with the clutch out and found that there was a bolt in the side of it where the wire spools on which had been dragging on the casing on the inside, so i removed all the little bits of metal, wire brushed the magnets inside and put it back together.

Most likely your solenoids are the issue. I've got a new one on order for mine at the moment

where did you order it from? Do you have the link?

I can't get the solenoid to click or the anything.

Im trying to find a decent wiring diagram so i can get a general idea of how i need to wire it up. Start with the basics.

My winch is champion and not stopped working in...4 years? Used it in anger. Underwater. Winched non stop for the full length of rope. Not missed a beat.

It's generally the solenoids in all winches that don't work...

Just search winch solenoids on eBay but this is the one I've ordered. Item number 251480376582. There is a way to test winch without solenoids using a battery. Just do a search on here. You need to check you are getting all the feeds at the solenoid to switch them of the remote. Some of the solenoids advertised in the bay had wiring diagrams on the listing so that may help you also.

Battery neg to earth on the winch motor, common connected to field 1 or 2, positive to the opposite field, job's a good 'un ..

A guy at Rothwell pay and play had a brand new one, one dunk in some muddy water and it was dead,

You might have a good one.

Seems now days every things like that!

How do you all seal your winches from water getting in and what isolating switch do i need to get?

There are 100amp ones with a 500amp for 5 second rating but the solenoid i have brought is 600 amp. is that overkill?..

I think my kill switch is 150a 550 max peak or something like that, plea try if seal lent when rebuilding them but you Won't keep it all out.

I like the 1" square bar trick paul! Just gotta find a switch and also a winch mount that i can weld in as far towards the grill as possible.

How much amps will the winch pull as i need to get a switch that can handle it. will this do?

Trying to source some power cables for it now, how far would you say it was from the 90s battery box to the front of the truck.. would 3m cover it i wonder?

Also seen that some people mention buying some heavy duty jump leads and putting new ends on them is cheaper. hmm

I've used 50/70mm from isolator +ve to Winch solenoid pack and battery -ve direct to winch earth .. with a smaller 35mm between battery and isolator which is on the battery box. No need for massive wiring from battery to isolator 'cos it's so close there's minimal voltage drop, but over the 2+metres to the winch there might be more ...

Don't use jump leads, unless they're feckin' hooooge ..

The following is good, I'd buy (if I had to) the largest csa wire I could afford.

I used 70mm2 cable on the front 8274 and 50mm2 from solenoid to motor and 50mm2 all the way for the rear xd9000.

Mine is welding ground cable

alot of people use welding wire for winch cable as it is rated for high currents
