Had a search and could not find the info I was looking for . What is the best way/place to mount a CB aerial on my 90. Most that I seem to see are mounted high on the back, so would that be with a gutter mount or would they be drilled through the bodywork?? Can anyone give me a link to the best sort of mount to get please.

Also, have been looking at the Danita 3000, used to have a Danita years ago and loved it - does anyone have anything good/bad or otherwise to say about these??

Many thanks

Adam

Is it a full length or half length arial?

Full length can really be mounted anywhere externally, although obviously higher the better. Half length needs a good ground plane at the base. There nothing better than being mounted on a solid flat sheet of metal. On a fender that can be the roof or wing. Again higher the better.

That's the best for reception theoretically. But tbh chances are you wouldn't notice much difference in reception whether it was the wing or roof.

Next is practical considerations.

If you plan on green laning or any other pursuit that will likely rip off an arial that's mounted to the roof, then you're gonna wanna put it somewhere more protected. Also, drilling hole in your roof will just be another place for water to enter your landy.

I think thunderpole do mounts off all types.

I remember from my college days, the best place for all round even transmission and reception is in the centre of the roof. If you fit the aerial to one side of the vehicle you get an oval directional effect. That's the theory anyway.

i got my cb stuff from 4x4cb.com i have the rear mount with cable and plug
Vehicle Aerial Mounts - Assorted Vehicle Mounts - : PSM-1 Rear/Side Mount with 5m cable with plug
and the Ariel
http://www.4x4cb.com/public/item.cfm?itemID=691d
which takes some abuse off road with out breaking unlike the springer Ariel's.

I find the Ariel and mount were easy to install and set up. i have a good SWR reading and it sends and receives for a fair distance at the off road sites i use,

I also have a quick disconnect mount for the Ariel so i can remove it when not in use

small hijack.. :hijacked: can you get handheld radios that can talk to cb's? i dont want a cb as i would hardly ever use it, but when we do go out id like to be able to chat to my mate who has a cb. might be easier to just get walkie talkies!?

I had a PSM mount on the 90 (well 2 actually as one was for the Ham radio) They were mounted either side of the back door on the flat back section of the roof. Always had a 6ft springer on defenders and discos and never damaged one yet. Fook knows how peeps manage to knacker em??

No ya can't

Yu can buy an hendheld CB but to be honest yu'd be bettter with a permanently installed one.

Yes have a look on ebay for "handheld cb radio" ;)

I have a G.E. hand held CB. It was made in the 70's or 80's and was designed to be used in emergencies. It plugs into the cigarette lighter and has a magnetic antennae (which doesn't stick too well to my RRC's roof). It works well, though.

hmmm.. might look into a proper cb actually.. after a quick blart on ebay, it seems they arent ad dear as i thought!

cheers fellas.

that sounds pretty interesting.

One of the guys int he club had a hand held CB it seemed to work pretty well but he did end up fitting a vehicle mounted one. If it is just for you and your mate and you won't be to far apart why don't you get a pair of rechargeable hand held walkie talkies for about £30

Mine is mounted on the rear just below the roof of my 90. Being alluminium they are a useless groundplane so I put an extra cable from the back of the mount and riveted it to the centre beam of my roof as that's steel. This gave an extremely low SWR reading so well worth it. I have a 1.6M Thunderpole and do lots of laning. It has been bent nearly flat and has never broken. The coil on the antenna needs to be above the roof if possible.

may i just say... bollocks...rf is conducted on the outer skin of cable/ground plane /radiating whip/what have you...rf like electrictity likes a low resistance to conduct across.(when not being radiated though free space/air etc)

so as ali is a better conductor than steel ity is better..

list of metals it prefers ..copper.ali.steel

though for a ground plane it just likes a larger area the better..at 27mhz that be atleast 9 foot in every direction around antenna..not possible...so just mount where it will not get ripped off in use..BUT higher the better AND if possible electrically connect each panel to chassis (via each connecting panel,ie connect roof to side panels, side panels to chassis) with wide copper cable..ie flat battery earth straps..that will make a difference...

mine mounts here..

have fun..(zen,rf engineer,io ham,auto electrics etc)

So why is it then that with the antenna mount flat on the back of the roof panel I have a massive SWR reading yet when I put a nice chunky earth from the back of the mount and connect it to the interior roof bar I get a SWR reading that is extremely low?

ps ... I was advised to do this by another electrical engineering RF whizzkid ... a little like yourself! ... it works for me so bollocks back at ya

If it's a PSM mount ya talking about. Yu need to scrape ALL the paint off the inside of the roof. ALso check that the platic washers are oinplace and preventing the inner sheath from earthing. poor cable will also affect SWR.

I had 2 PSM mounts one for 2mtr/70cm Ham radio and one for CB and both had perfect SWR's
