Hi Guys & Galls

I have a 2003 Freelander Td4 Auto

I don't have any issues in D the gears go up and down as normal,
Sport can be selected by pulling the leaver to the right,
Manual (Tiptronic/steptronic) gears 1-4 all work fine,
HDC can be selected and goes solid green in reverse,

But in normal Auto mode I can not pull the leaver into position 1

I have noticed that the gear selector is,, shall we say a little wobbly..
not so much side to side but when in D the selector can move about 1/2"
forward and backward without changing gear,,
is this simply a stretched gear cable or is it something more sinister..

Thanks for your help..

Yes mate,,

Slots in fine and no rolling either..

Do you have an idea what it might be??

I have heard the linkage can become worn and loose..
Freelander Gear Selector 01.MP4 - YouTube

or it could be one of the internal gear box servos solenoid??
I hope its not that though..

I suppose a good old fluid change might not be such a bad idea..

Thats even better then as it would seem I only have two potential issues,,

loose or stretched Cable
Or The dreaded gear box solenoid issue

1. Will look at the cable over the weekend weather permitting,,
and hope it is that,
2. Then a fluid change
3. Then the solenoid if needed..

if it the solonoid should I be getting the F4 message in auto ????

Santa..I would like for Christmas a nice big Lotto win...

i would be leaning towards the cable and the selector mate have a look at this first and go from there. put into 2nd and get under it and have a fiddle about with the selector and see if u can get it to go into 1st

a loto win would be good for me to mate then the freelander would be running sweet :)

Check the lever thing which attaches the selector mechanisum to the auto int bent underneath the auto. Try controlling the auto lever by moving the selector underneath the auto to feel where it sort of slots into the selection options. I had a simular problem on mine. Lever underneath had bent and one end of selection was ok, with the other not sitting in gear correctly. You normally notice it with an ill defined 4th/D options. If you undo the selector mechanisum under the auto you should mark it before doing so, so you can put it back eggsactly the same as before, if you can't get it any betterer. You could spend hours trying to put it back if not.

rtfm before yu try

I would be paying someone to do it mate,,,;)
I don't trust myself with that ..

Thanks guys I think this is the best starting point, great info Hippo, I think you have just saved me many hours under the Freelander,

I have some engine bits to fit first, filters, EGR bypass & BMW crank case cyclone, with a full clean on the inlet manifold,,tomorrow I hope..

And then this will be next on my list,,probably next weekend now..

Thanks again all..
