It could be the garage fuel pump. Sometimes they have to re-calibrate the pumps to pump slower as the auto cut off engages too soon. I had this very problem with one of my cars a while back. I mentioned it to the garage attendent who told me that the pumps had been calibrated wrong, they were dispensing too fast for the fuel tanks to accept. A few days later they sorted it and I could fill the car up again 
I still have trouble with some Tesco pumps. I found I mustn't insert the pump nozzle all the way in to the filler tube. Let it sit slightly out and it works fine.

seen this a few times, the end of the filler cap has fell off and dropped into the filler tube on the tank, it wont go right inside the tank as there is a safety flap on the filler, take off the filler tube and you see the offending item in the tube on the tank, then buy a new filler cap, the lock barrel can be swapped over

seen 'em break up a few times, they only clip together, once they've come apart its time for a new one as it'll never stay together

theres a flap in there to stop fuel ****ing out if you roll the car, i normally take it out if i have the filler off for any reason

i ran a doosul car fer a few years , when i changed it to a petrol one i was adamant i wouldn't put deesul in it by mistake. so orf i go to the garage fer me petrol , ensures i got the petrol hose and proceeded to fill it up. after 5 mins i had managed to get about 1/2 a galleon in. after about another 30mins the dude comes out his little box and suggested i might like to try the lead free hose!!

if your cars upside down, it will leak everything no matter what.
if you dont drive like an idiot you wont put it on its roof!!!
i take it out because i've had them stick and you cant fill it, its an old trick i used to do on suzuki's because they stick all the time so its a bit of a habit now

Could be the way you are holding the nozzle, in my 90 if I let it sit where it would naturaly want to sit it cuts out... I have to hold it at a slight angle so that it can shoot down the filler rather than into the side of the filler.
its a q of lettin the air out as quick as the HC goes in.
