Trying to fit a new clutch to a D1 300TDi and the bell housing goes on without issue but only so far as leaving a gap of about 10mm all the way round. I've had the box detached and re-attached several times but still have the same problem. Any ideas?

is engine supported, have you turned input shaft to align splines whilst pushing up ,it will need to be perfectly square with engine

The input shaft was turned to align it. It's a fair old lump to try and man handle so I suppose it might not be 100% square but I added a couple of lengths of threaded bar and have been sliding onto that, maybe need a couple at the top too just to make sure it is aligned.

i dont use guide bolts as they tend not to hold it square enough , i feel it in whilst turning input shaft at the same time , and never pull it up with bolts

Sounds like the pilot spigot isn't going into the flywheel bush.

Don't bend it all about too much, you'll distort the centre plate.

Check you havent got anything trapped in there like the loom , and are there some locating lugs that stick out a bit (10mm)

Thanks.... I thought about something stuck between the bell housing and engine so checked that one. I'm trying to lug the box up to the engine using a car jack and block and tackle so that is probably why. Will collect my hydraulic motorcycle lift on the way to the barn to finish the disco as that will lift it more stably
