*sigh*. Remove the big nut securing the drop arm. Using a puller and a big ####ing hammer remove the drop arm. If you have no luck you may need to cut it off as it can be a bugger. Decide whether you're going to go down the disco drop arm route or merely replace the balljoint (hint - buy a disco drop arm, they're cheap). Carry on with the procedure

Hitting things hard with a big hammer makes me nervous. Is it not possible to use a press to get the damn thing apart?

Also, I can't see in the Haynes manual where it deals with removal/rebuilding of this joint. Mine is the "90, 110 & Defender 1983 to 2007 (up to 56 registration) Diesel" - long title, short on content, it seems.:(

Even if you remove the steering box you will struggle to get it in a press! Just beat it with a hammer, you will end up doing it in the end. Some people cut the arm with a grinder, and then replace.

Chapter 11 sec 16 has some info, but tbh those manuals are not very good, if you intend doing serious work on your landy it might be better to get a real LR manual, reprints are available. Brooklands Books are good. :)

Argh! I knew something wasn't right when it didn't cover changing the oil filter!

Ta for the info. I feel an angle grinder coming on.
I don't know why it is, but since at least 1984 and probably long before that, these really shi**y kind of jobs always come along in August when the weather makes me even more bad tempered and irritable than usual.

Take the nut off and try using a puller while whacking all around it with a hammer, you might be lucky and it'll come off after a bit of persuasion. An angle grinder is a last resort really

Putting a big drift down through the engine bay onto the shoulder of the arm and beating it with a lump hammer is good! :) I have never had to cut one, or remove the box!

Now that sounds promising. I'm the king of big drifts. I like to be a long way from the action. Plus I've got a 3x4x5" lump of steel weighing a good couple of kilos that should be just the job. Best of all, the bonnet comes right off with no fuss!
cheers.
