Hi all,

This ball joint's boot has split and so I'd like to replace it. Trouble is, I don't know exactly what it's called so can't order a new part until you lot disabuse me of my ignorance!
So, pretty please.. What is it? (images attached)

cheers.

It is the drop arm joint, you buy a kit to rebuild it. Some people struggle to remove the arm, but it isn't that difficult if you have good tools and are mechanically competent. Penetrating fluid, big rigid puller, smack it with a big hammer til it comes off. Then rebuild the joint in the end of the arm.

Busterbus has done a good write-up on changing the ball joint. First essential is a bloody big hammer.

If you're taking the whole arm off then make it worth your while and change to a discovery drop arm. Much much easier to replace the balljoint in future then

A frame balljoint is completely different, it goes on the back axle!

Doh!!!. I should have checked the first post, or paid attention or something. Think I just assumed once I saw it was a pig that it was the A frame - I remember doing mine!

(crawls away hoping not too many people noticed)

Can't get away with that. Looks like it's been split quite a while so there'll be grit and crud in there. :-(

You are right, it would be better to replace the worn races and pin, and fill the whole thing with new grease, before replacing the boot! :)

drop arm ball joint- legendary bastard to get arm off

busterbus has repair how to or change complete arm

I'm still not sure why this joint has acquired so much negative mystique. Surely it cannot resist the awesome power of a solidly cast universal ball joint puller?

The puller is needed to remove the arm from the tapered, splined shaft that comes off the steering box. The ball joint itself is easy to break.

I always get them off, I have a big rigid puller that I made specially, but whatever you use, you will need to belt it with a big hammer, the shock causes it to come off.

Hitting things hard with a big hammer makes me nervous. Is it not possible to use a press to get the damn thing apart?

Also, I can't see in the Haynes manual where it deals with removal/rebuilding of this joint. Mine is the "90, 110 & Defender 1983 to 2007 (up to 56 registration) Diesel" - long title, short on content, it seems.:(
