Not that you ever would as I can't see any benefit, but in theory, is it possible to build a new series?

It's possible to buy most (all?) parts of a series new, so if you stuck them together could you end up with a 14 plate series?

I obviously have no idea how the registration system works but I know people build kit cars new so in theory you could build a land rover (though a brand new Range Rover would probably be cheaper than a whole series worth of new parts!)

Just curious :)
 
Parts are cheap so could do it, difficulty would be finding a new old stock engine, unless you rebuilt an old one with new parts
 
A local scrap yard yard near me, used to do it with minis and minivans, only problem was they could only fit goldseal engines, these were old engines factory reconditioned, just as good as new.
 
no as it'd be based on engine build date, i.e. my Cadillac engine even if I drop it into a new build hotrod would be classed as a 1976 engine and therefore run on the period test standard
 
if the chassis was an original one which was stamped by the factory and you used age appropriate parts I think it would go down on that chassis, if not then yes it'd be a 14 plate
 
If built by someone as a kit car type effort, it would need an sva surely to be a 14 plate? It prob wouldnt pass!
 
I can't see the point of building an exact replica

if you wanted to build one from scratch surely you would want to build it improved so maybe a coil chassis from designachassis, disc brakes, somebody does brand new axles maybe Ashcroft - might be rear only - and a modern box and engine petrol or diesel.

then as you say it would have to go through whatever tests a kit car goes through and as long as its built properly it ought to pass and get a plate for the year you built it
 
Me neither, just wondered if it was theoretically possible... a brand new 14 plate series 1 would be kinda cool though...

Didn't LR make an improved series with coils, discs and even air con? :p
 
I'm sure its theoretically possible, new chassis etc, these palces that do recon boxes and engines usually will sell you one at a higher price if you don't have an exchange unit.

I got a quote from one place that said they could put series 3 gears in a series 1 bell housing for £1,200 so I could have full synchro, if my s1 box pops its mortal coil I will take them up on it.

a series with real air con, now that would be good

Series 1 would be more difficult, a series 3 is more achievable as a lot more parts are cheap and off the shelf
 
some mechanical parts might be hard to find or expensive to get made for an s1 but afaik you can get the chassis and all body panels, fuel tanks new and recon for all the things like engines gearboxes etc

A series 3 six pot gearbox will bolt up to your S1 engine.
 
I did consider building a scaled up 80" on RRC axels and paras, as in make the body wider and longer in proportion to the wider axels. Plus TDI, PAS and rag top.
 
thx, so I need an lt76 with a 6 cylinder bell housing, spookily there is one on the bay at the mo but with no back gear, I think the seller robbed the overdrive out and sold it separately, looks cheap but very dirty. I have an overdrive sat around so I could slap that on and stick the whole thing on the s1 and have full synchro?
