Just out of curiosity... It is possible to "localize" a L322 or L405?

What I mean is :
Change Miles to KM in every possible ways as well as the GPS (Can we load/install new Maps?)

Also, is Range Rover warranty international?

As you may have guess I am thinking to import a L322 (very low mileage) or L405 (new) to Japan.

A brand new L405 in Japan cost twice as much as a UK version and while I could live without a GPS (Map) having Miles everywhere instead of KM will drive me nuts.

Most recent cars I have owned (Ford/Renault) you could easily change the readings between imperial and metric...... But you are talking Range rover....

Think the reason they cost so much there is because the Japs apply massive import duties to them. They have also been known to change design requirements at the drop of an hat. Requiring boatloads of British cars that met requirements when they were loaded on the ships. Having to be modified at great expense once they got there before they could be sold. Devious little bastards they are.

Not being an expert in these things but presumably a new car import would be subject to some sort of taxation, plus vehicle checks for compliance, etc. There could also be issues with fm radio frequencies, and other minor bits.

Maybe the Japanese tax authorities have a website with more information?

Different radio for the Japs. They also have twin aerials. One on each side.

Let me brake some of the urban legends for you.

1. Manufacturer (New Cars).
There are indeed parts that are different, but nowadays this become less and less a reality (cost saving). Some manufacturer also ,in some weird case, repaint the cars when they arrive in Japan (rare weird case). Finally their are some tax involved here.

2. The average Joe and some professionals (New/Old Cars)
There are several case figure here but you will not be treated like the above (point 1)! Indeed their is a loophole like in any industry that many professional here use and it is called (Translated from French) Brand New 2nd hand (don't you have something like this in Europe as well?). You purchase a car in the UK, drive it 100km and/or wait a few weeks "Voila" this is no longer a brand new car but a 2nd hand car that does not have any of the above (point 1) limitations that would require to change some part of the vehicle.

In Japan the business of Import car is doing amazingly well, where I leave I have in a 300m radius 7 of them where Ferrari, Lambo and so on are sold (WOODSTOCK Trading, Inc. for example). What these companies does or I want to do for myself is : Purchase car in Europe go to what you call the MOT process (Shaken in Japan) and sell them without any modifications. They are generally 20 to 30% cheaper than retail cars.

To give you an example Alfa Japan at one time only sold 20 to 30% of all Alfa in Japan, the other 70 to 80% were sold by a company that import them from Europe.

So, how hard would it be to localize the car (PS Japan Radio is just crap, if you get 15 minutes worth of music in an hour you are dead lucky)

I believe as with the P38 the miles/km are set in the BeCM (or whatever the L322/L405 alternative is called). So you'd need a tool that can access that and change it from miles to km. Simple stuffs. Although I suspect with the L405 no tool exists on the market yet. It should all be OBDII compliant, but they can still put limitations on some aspects.

Ok, thanks... Now I need to learn where to find what I want ;-)

Most main dealers will refuse to do warranty work on any imported car, so your warranty will probably become null and void.

Not sure why mph would drive you mad - I have two Range Rovers with mph in a km country and you just get used to it.

Hell the speedometers here have both mph and kph on them. no problem

The Britpart Lynx enables me to change that stuff on my P38 - I suspect it'll be the same for the L322, the L405 module is out soon too - Omitec being the official suppliers of software for Land Rover the Lynx should have the L405 access before anyone else.

I have a crashed p38 4.0 v8 import from Japan that I use as a doner. The instrument binical has been changed for a UK one. The Jap one (which I have) is just Kph only.
