would it run right ? Wouldn't the computer have a fit? It'd sound good though if it did run! It'd probably drink more wouldn't it aswell? They sound nice enough with a normal exhaust on? My back box gets such a bashing off road I'm thinking of taking that off, maybe the centre box aswell, but the cats have got to stay for MOT
If you have the Thor engine and Bosh Motronic ECU then I knowTestbook can do a retune without CATS its meant to be for some export cars though. I have seen this on my TestBook but have never tried it on my or a customers car. as for the earlier Lucas ECU cars I don't know. 
like gav says with LPG no need for cats.. without lpg you will fail emissions in MOT without them.. shoudln't cause any greater fuel consumption, if anything should reduce it a tiny fraction depending on how well any required retune is done.. mine's an older 3.9 disco but will update once my cats are off over the next few weeks..

Not sure on this so please feel free to check.
Cats became mandatory fitment to cars on or after K reg. Some models were fitted with them before this though. Removeal of cats would be automatic failure at MOT.
But as I said check that with an MOT tester. As for the ECU needing the lamdas, drill a hole in your cat replacment pipe weld correct sized nut over the top and insert lamda. Worked on my Rover 416 a few years ago. For some reason it even made the exhaust quieter at the front of the cabin. Slight increase in fuel consuption though.
