Looks like I need cam followers done - engine is rattling like a good un all of a sudden. Tried a bottle of Wynns follower remedy but its maybe a little better but barely.
So as I don't have a bill for a cam in the paperwork that came with the car it makes sense to get it all done together.
So what's it going to cost me for the whole kit:
standard camshaft, including followers, chain, gears, gaskets, oil seals, oil filter, oil etc.

Go to a decent suppliers website and either use a calculator or add to the basket to add up.... :D

If your getting a new cam you may aswell go for a highlift cam get better mpg if you dont use the extra power :)

Oddly I have, but I'm just trying to gauge how reasonable or otherwise the quote is...
Someone may have done similar recently.

It seems that oem 4.2 camshafts are NLA.
So what to buy and more importantly what not to?
Any suggestions?

Not sure what the options are, the 4.2 cam is very different to a 3.9, I would say get something as close as possible to the original spec which according to the book is as follows:

Inlet opens at 28 degrees, inlet closes at 64 degrees, duration is 272 degrees and valve peak is at 108 degrees.

Exhaust opens at 72 degrees, closes at 20 degrees, duration is 272 degrees and valve peak is at 116 degrees.

compare that to a 3.9 cam:

Inlet opens at 32 degrees, inlet closes at 73 degrees, duration is 285 degrees and valve peak is at 104 degrees.

Exhaust opens at 70 degrees, closes at 35 degrees, duration is 285 degrees and valve peak is at 114 degrees.

The differences in cam profile no doubt reflect the lower compression of the 4.2 and the more advanced ignition timing of 8 degrees +/- 1 degree compared to 4 or 5 degrees +/- 1 degree.

Let me know how you get on because I have no doubt my project LSE will probably need a cam as well!

Do a search for part number ERR5925, seems to be quite cheap. ERR4946 I think has been superceded by 5925. I also found references to part number ERR3456, ERR5924 but I think the first part number 5925 is the one to look for.

Real Steel have been mentioned by more than one person so might be worth a call.
Local LR dealer confirmed ERR5925 is NLA but they can supply another part non OEM though. I'd hope it would be ok.
Kent cams H180 has been suggested.
Still not quite sure where to go.

The mild Rad Steel cam (the cylone?) is very good as a replacement for OE.
