Hi,

When I change gear and let the clutch out, there's a slight delay before a fairly excruciating "thump" noise comes from behind me. I've no idea if its diff, clutch, transfer box or mountings (or drive shafts/splines etc.) Is this a commonly known fault with defenders or do I just paint it yellow now and confirm its status as a lemon! I've just bought this car from a relative as a favour, and its been very badly maintained to the point where its on the verge of not being economically repairable. Unfortunately for me, I can see that with some time and effort it can be restored ! (possibly...!).

any hints appreciated!

Righto, I'll give that a bash. As for selling, not until I've tried to bring it back to life, ask me in a couple of months time when i've mashed my hands with the hammer and am partially deaf from the bead blasting I'm going to have to do!

also check yer A frame ball joint - that's what was causing that symptom on my 90 - also cheap and easy.

if it had bin a gaylander then that fairly excruciating thump would be easier to diagnose. it would most likely be the sound of yer jaw hitting the deck when yer check yer bank balance

OK, will check the A-Frame also. Am going to have to get a book, have any of you come across a weighty tomb for the defender that is up to the job? I've looked at the Haynes Vague ("somewhere on your car, are some doors and a windows, replace as required..") but it seems to cover so many different landys I doubt its going to be much cop for me, as I need something fairly idiot/retrard proof. Any suggestions? (and it must have big fisher price pictures!).

is it a really bad thump cos me thinks most landys come standard with drive train lash...part of the deal. my missus bitches when she drives mine, but when i drive she says its not there antmore. i just smoothen out the gearchange

if it is the a-frame its pretty easy to check. put in gear...no handbrake....get under and rock the car with yer foot and put yer hand on the a-frame bushes and ball....should be no movement. i replace all my suspension bushes every 50,000 km...cuts all the crap

Its not drive train lash, I've driven landy's before with work on and off road, its not a normal noise - this one would make you wince! When I get home tonight I'll try your tip and see if its the problem, from the other comments and stuff on the web it certainly sounds like it. Thanks for the info!
