is it possible to change the bulkhead without removing the roof and windsreen to save some time? if so are there any things that might trip me up?

When I replaced mine I left the roof on but I did remove the windscreen. It was a bit of a squeeze to get the screen back in with the dowel holes I think I undid a few bolts behind the door. Make sure you measure up your gaps before tightening everything backup.

No need to remove the roof but yes, you have to remove the windscreen.
That said, removing the windscreen frame takes only minutes so is pretty insignificant compared to the amount of time it takes to replace the bulkhead.

when i fitted the headlining to the front the captive nuts (rivnuts) that secure the sunvisors now just spin and are going to be a complete ball ache to remove so i was hoping it would be possible to change the bulkhead by just removing the wings and floor

So did mine, I just used a pair of angled long-nosed pliers to hold the "captive" nut while I undid them.
When off a new set of rivnuts were fitted.

You really will be making life difficult for yourself if you try to do it with the windscreen in position.
If you think that removing a couple of spinning rivnuts is a problem then you could have a miserable time as the job progresses, they could be the least of your worries.

i agree, was worth asking the question though. i'm facing enough challenges as it is. i'm fitting a puma bulkhead to a 1991 defender and there are loads of brackets and captive fixings that are in all the wrong places lol

One has to ask why?

Are you keeping the Puma dash or retrofitting the original dash?

Be interesting to see how you've got the old dash to fit the tdci bulkhead.
It's something I've seriously considered myself before as it seems the easiest way to get a good bulkhead nowadays it to buy a tdci one.

it looks pretty straight forward, there are a few captive bolts to cut off and some missing holes i will use a rivnut gun for. the only other thing is altering the transmission tunnel, other than that it looks fairly easy
