Ok so the landy has had a squeek under the bonnet since i fitted the new timing belt and drive belts.

I'm satisfied its not the timing tensioners or the alternator or PAS pump.

The water pump looks pretty new too.

There was slop in the viscuous idler pulley and i'm thinking it may be this. I have got a new bearing in hand for the serpentine tensioner.

Whats the thing to do with the viscuous idler bearing?? It appears they made it integral with the cover?? Bloody stupid idea if they did:mad:

I see there is a guy on ebay with a replacement bearing that apparently was as hard to find as rocking-horse crap:doh: He's got a couple left at £60 ea:eek: and needs a hydraulic press to fit.

Is there another way, apart from a new front cover at around £175! This is a bad design part and could have been made from two bearings and a shaft etc and easy to fix.

Any other options??

I had discounted that idea because it was silent before the service was done and i could'nt figure any sane reason why it shoud suddenly just start doing it. But yes it does sound like a budgie and yes it is bloody annoying:rolleyes:

I will certainly invest that sort of cash if it fixes it:)

But the question remains - why does it start only after a new belt etc???

The only thing i can think of is the squeek being caused by the back of the belt being more rubbery than the old one and the wrong angle of the tensioner causing it to skid across the belt??

I will hopefully get out and try the fix today, if it stops ****ing down:(
 
I had the same budgie sound when I bought my D2, after about 50 miles it stopped. A new belt was fitted prior to my buying the vehicle but it had sat for 5 months.

give the belt a spray of wd40 to see if it shuts it up.
not a permenant fix, but gives an idea where to look.

also, and cafefully, put a bit of pressure on the tensioner using a long screwdriver (or similar). again if it shuts up, gives another idea of whats causing it.

(obviously with engine running. mind fingers and rotating bits!)
 
if it does turn out to be the bearing on the timing pully dont get the one from ebay landrover do it for £148, iv just changed the cam belt, water pump, tensioner and timming case cover but didnt change the belt and i had the same problem ive left and its gone away it might be a bit of oil, water or crap on the new belt or on the other pullys.
 
Ok, i nipped out during work and slacked off the tensioner mount, due to the A/C pump being in the way, i skipped the penny and went for a strip of aluminium shim about 5" long - much easier to get in.

Amazingly it is much better :) :) I will leave it at that until a dry day or two, but it shows whats causing it. I will try a straight-edge on the pulley face to see just what is going on here.

She's nice and quiet (?) again now and i can concentrate on the water leak in the back:(
 
Can still be viscous fan bearing. Look for the fix here:

If you have air conditioning it might be the compressor clutch bearing:

The video says it all, and the procedure can 1:1 be used to change the TD5 and V8 Discovery 2 air conditioning clutch bearing. This is the correct bearing: 31-30523

By just changing the bearing you can leave the airco system itself in peace.
 
He he, never mind :)

AFIK the bearing for the viscuous is not available. I might get an old cover and re-engineer it to take a shaft and two standard races.

Its a badly designed part IMHO.
