:( Been playing today in our local quarry, got a bit ambitious and went for a small steep climb, nothing too heavy but half way up i came to a stop.Did the regulation hold it on the brake, select reverse and went straight back down. When i went to drive off my s3 wasnt happy, a few strange noises. Pulled out the n/s half shaft, it was buggerd, ha thought i stick it in 4 wd and drive slowly home(only a few miles), still verry unhappy, even making strange noises on the end of a tow pole. Off went my good mate to get his trailer(thanx jeff )and tok me back to his garage.Changed d/shaft as matter of course, drove forward but still not happy. Now i cant decide weather its transfer box or gear box, jeff has a s2 box complete with transfer that i can have, but do i try the transfer box first ? or just go straight in and change both ?. I no s3 boxes arnt the strongest, i have a 200 di lump in mine(i took the turbo off because of the weakness) but i wasnt doing anything really strenuous(?).Any ne got any help here, i need this fixed asap as its my daily driver

well i had no drive at all at the rear untill i changed the half shaft, in 4 wdrive it seemed to clunk and bang, i reversed a bit stopped then had no drive at all, i pushed it back a few feet then tried to pull away and it drove, think there,s a tooth or two come adrift in there, after i changed the half shaft it drove in 2wd but still jumped and banged, thats why i think its gearbox/transfer box :(

spot on, took the bolts out of the front drive flanges tonight and drove it, the noise has gone, started stripping it tonight, will finish it 2morro, much less grief than a gearbox change, thanx for your help

I think you would be better off taking the vehicle to your local landrover dealer, as messing about with things you know nothing about could end in disaster. As for 'playing' in a local quarry i'm struggling to comprehend the stupidity of this. Not only is it dangerous but also highly unnecessary as landrover provide experience days. I think it is time for you to think hard about your actions!
 
your partly right about taking it too a dealer but that has some downsides
A. its far more expensive to take to a dealer
B. a series landy is the worlds greatest mechano set, a person with a bit of common sence can usually repair a old landy providing he has the correct tools and parts
if he doesn't try to do a home repair on his landy, every time it breaks he'll resort to spending more money at the dealer, because he'l rely on them to do the work.
thats fine if your minted, but for a lot of people cash is tight nowadays.
 
Did i read madst,s reply corectly, is he taking the ****? a very large part of landy owning is working on it yourself, as for playing in a quarry, great fun! Go get a life!

do you not have play toys, horse's, jet ski's, boat any thing fun to play with on your free time? How can you judge someone else choice of having fun, if you don't like that type of fun then don't do it. Know Madst what do you do for fun, time to tell all. Hope you are man enough to say?
 
I do some work myself on the range rover but only electrical as I trained as a electrician some years ago so I have a understanding, but what I would not do is mess about with transmission/brakes/steering as this could have consequences not only for you but the poor person you hit on the road and so is best left for a qualified mechanic. Yes I do have 'play toys' but would not take my 'daily driver' to a quarry as not only is it dangerous/childish/stupid but would not want to risk damaging the vehicle I use to commute to work. Things I do for fun include sailing, theatre, wine tasting, countryside walks, hosting dinner partys the list could go on, so yes I do have a life as you put it and a quite fulfilled one.

Matthew, I am almost lost for words. I think your crevat is too tight. I suspect you will attract some abuse for your soft views. :pop2:
 
allthough the powers that be whan you to belive otherwise, only a very small number of accidents are caused by poor workmaship on cars, yes it does happen but not often, a landy is one of the best cars to work on for the ameture, and as long as he/she uses common sense and a good book there should be no problem. The problem with this once great country of ours, is that we have allowed prats to invent and then goldplate stupid rules that make this a joyless place to live, life is dumed down to the level where all the fun and the risk is gone. so i still say get a life
 
HMMMMMM, seemed to have opened a rite can of worms here !. Its fixed noe, n/s rear half shaft, front diff and when i stripped the front end to replace the diff i noticed i,d twisted the n/s front half shaft aswell !. As for taking it to land rover BOLLOX, as for shouldnt be playing in quarry,s MORE BOLLOX, i enjoyed every second of sunday, breaking it at the end of the day was just one of those things, its fixed and i,m happy, guess where i,m going on sunday . . . . . . .!
 
My god man, surely you can not be serious! It does not matter how often it happens the fact is it does happen and people get hurt. I'm sure you wouldn't be so quick to condone such actions if it was a member of your family hurt in such a incident. Also after browsing this forum I don't think most on here would have the intelligence to follow a 'good book'. I suggest you bin that book along with the beano comics and pick up a book more cultured like Jane Austen, you never know you might actually learn something worthwhile.
